Added... to ParadiseDecay I am now adding "dates" to the new reviews on my top post.
Thanks to Jigarbov and daDonn I separated my reviews by map type on the top post.
The rating scale has not changed, but within a map type you can at least see how they stack up against each other.
This is a map I was asked to critique. There is no forum thread, but I hope Calliass4 sees my play-by-play notes and finds them useful for future maps.

Genre: Challenge
Review Summary:
A survival / create the monument map.
I played...
Minecraft Ver: 1.0.1
Mode: Single player
Difficulty: Easy
Texture Pack: default
Mods Used: none
My Total Playtime: 1 hour
My Final Score: 192 diamonds and a headache
Playing this offline...
You start with a bunch of junk in your inventory.
Do I go in this house? The rail track? The portal?
Went in the house.
I like the mix of chain and leather in Stahscream's room.
Empty chest in the ceiling of Crystal's closet.
I think I like the cauldron toilet.
So... am I allowed to take the 64 diamonds and craft them into armor? I somehow think not, so I won't.
I have no weapon, but I'm going through the "...when prepared..." door.
Challenge 1... so... am I allowed to dig? I have no digging tool. Guess I'm going back to that portal...
"paneful experience" - I see what you did there
There's a blank sign by this double chest (with minecarts) in the nether
The minecart has no easy place to 'launch'. As soon as I put it down it went rolling away, so I just followed it. It caught on fire and burned on the way up - glad I wasn't in it. It got stuck at a turn/incline anyway, near the top.
So... what was the purpose of going down here? I didn't get anything...? Oh good grief, that's exactly what I "win".
Uh.... going back through the exit portal took me through a different portal with ice and sand. It's not a problem, but it's a little odd.
I guess I'm going to ride this other minecart track (outside the starting house)
Pig on the track stopped me. Continuing...
Cow on the track stopped me. Screw it. Walking.
I am pretty sure I would have hit the ending block and bounced back. Need a way to stop players.
What is this big dirt thing with the red/white snowflake? Am I supposed to break it? I must be...
This is a little tedious. I'm spawning a shovel (for the sake of time) and will destroy it after I clear this dirt.
Uh. Nevermind. Diamond stuff.
Upgraded from chain (that was never used) to diamond.
So... am I supposed to mine this entire big pile of stuff? That sounds very tedious, so I did a quick replace. It's completely empty except for ores and water. But I already have diamond tools. I can replace boots and helmet with iron, but that's the only value in this pile, it really doesn't seem like the time investment is worth the reward. There is no wood, so I can't make torches from the coal. Heading back.
Oh - the water washed away some of the track.
Am I allowed to break down a tree for wood?
Screw it - I'll just pick up these torches along the rail track instead.
Returning to the main house, I reread the signs. Are these the only rules? I guess I'm allowed to break blocks... I don't see anything saying that I can't, except the sign outside that says "to the only place you can mine".
Ok - challenge 1. Do I mine forward or down? It looks like I should break the gravel behind the sign...? Since that's a common theme in custom maps.
After mining all of the gravel and finding nothing, I guess I was supposed to break the stone and go down...
Hurt myself in the fall, but don't care. Hopefully there are no mobs down here. I should have made/brought a water bucket...
So... 25 minutes in (would have been 45 if I hadn't cheated) and I am just getting to the tutorial. This is a problem.
Went up the stairs/side passage... dead end. Am I supposed to dig? Not going to yet, will come back if need be.
Why am I getting a stone axe? I still have diamond.
Is the egg significant in some way?
Ok - choose "wisely"... but how can I make an educated choice? Are there any clues?
The middle door has darkness, so I'm going that way...
Hmmm... so... my "consequence" is just a dead end. Game over? :sad.gif: For the sake of the review I'm going through a different door.
Went through the right door. Should I break this dirt block? It sticks out... Nope!
Eggs. Should I do something with them?
"break here..." ok... if you say so... Yeah. That's what I expected. But... the lava is so slow I would have to be an idiot to be trapped.
Ok, "break here to go back". It's the dead end... so... why? Why? I could easily just walk back the way I came... there was no one-way door...
Left door.
Grateful for the ladder. Thought I was stuck under the ice for a minute. All that for 128 diamond...
So... is that the end of the map? I'm back at the house.
After randomly walking I see a cross and a black ... triangle thing.
Oh - I just realized I was supposed to follow torches.
It led me back to 'hardcore parkour in the nether' - continuing past. (The snow is covering most of the netherrack, but now I get it. I totally missed this last time I came out of the portal fyi)
Ok... "create the monument". Unfortunately, I take no joy in this so I just walk across the ice.
Again - trying to kill me just for the heck of it. The player now has no reason to trust your signs (the narrator).
What sort of prize is this? Random track stuff? But the LAPIS I'm supposed to throw in the lava - can't keep that dangerous stuff!
"Don't harves lapis until..." so... why would I harvest this lapis at all? Is that my score, not these diamonds?
Challenge 7? Wait... what happened to 5 and 6?
And... there's no clay? Are you talking about the clay that's underwater (but not directly under the sign)?
Well, after breaking that clay and trying not to drown, I found... nothing! And not really sure why I would want the clay - I still have plenty of dirt, cobblestone, etc... from prior "challenges"...
Ok - the cross is... just a landmark. I was starting to hope it was the mast of a sunken ship or something interesting.
The arrow isn't pointing to the island, and I almost went past it into random terrain, except the reeds caught my eye (I didn't see the signs at distance).
Another "create the monument". But now I don't see ANY reward or place to go next?
So... I guess that is the end.
I will have to recheck the forum thread later, but I guess this is purely just a survival/"challenge" map?

Hey rsmalec, just wondering if you could play my map, Levi's Nightmare and do a review. I think it would be really cool to see how my map compares to the many other maps that you have played. Also, thanks for helping the reviewers and those with map lists in our fight to get moved to a better section.
Thanks to ParadiseDecay I am now adding "dates" to the new reviews on my top post.
Thanks to Jigarbov and daDonn I separated my reviews by map type on the top post.
The rating scale has not changed, but within a map type you can at least see how they stack up against each other.
Just wondering, how do you rate maps without stories (such as mine)?
All maps are reviewed on the same scale right now. And I break it out by category so you know where points come from. I leave detailed feedback in your thread so you can chose what you do with it. If it is a straight survival or puzzle mapwuth no "story" it's usually a 2/4.
1/4 is reserved for a confusing or poor story, so if there is no story you're technically safer.
3/4 (for nonadventure maps) probably means you have a good reason for the CHARACTER (not justthe player) to be in that situation and/or there is flavor/background to the world you are moving thru.
I feel it is important (to my personal tastes) to reward a survival or puzzle map with that extra point (4/4) if it really shines above the rest.
It's not a perfect system for everyone, but it works for me. Please let me know if you have a better idea!
(Notices one name in a different shade of blue)
2 story?
4 difficulty?
Huh?
Thought it would be 3-4 story and 1 for difficulty (I like maps harder than most)
BTW the f in my name isn't supposed to be capitalized. Just saying.
The blue name was due to not having a URL for the forum post at the time, but I fixed that now, and your name.
The story was good. 2 = average.
Difficulty = I felt you had a good balance of mobs and puzzles. Overall you have a really good score, I hope your map is getting some notice.

Blame uses ratings from this thread. His thread has too many updates for me to keep up with :wink.gif:
