I have a youtube series planned, but not ready to quote a date.
What part are you struggling with?
Generally I'm struggling with which blocks to modify (for example, I'm planning on making a "sideways birch bark" texture so it looks like the player is crossing a "fallen birch tree". It's tricky because I don't know of a block that has a special texture for two sides anbd has the rest be the same texture, so I'm thining of covering the "inside" part of the tree with something else.)
EDIT: Other than the texture pack, the map is almost complete. It takes me a long time after it's "100% complete" to release it as I tend to make many tweaks to the graphics and fine-tune the difficulty/item progressing, if you get what I mean. :smile.gif:
There is definitely a portion of players who will pass you by if you REQUIRE a mod. And I think it's pretty high.
But it sounds like your use of a mod would be 'optional', and the map could still be played without the custom music?
My Superheroes map was built to use single player commands mod, but I added an alternate path if you don't have it. Deep Space Turtle Chase (over 300k downloads) uses mods for music, but also lets you play without the mod.
Another point for making it optional; mods are broken with every patch. Sometimes for a day, sometimes for weeks. You don't want to be at the mercy of a mod that gets abandoned by its maker and never gets updated.
Also, we're still expecting the mod api to arrive soon (Mojang said January?) which will change how mods are applied to the game, and don't be surprised if mods are broken for a while until they redesign for the api. This might make mods more accepted (like texture packs).
I agree with your points, although some of my mods are sort of required, I could always make another version of my map, personally, I don't feel that the base minecraft is what I want when creating maps, and the modding api may actually help in the long run... My map's long away from completion so hopefully it won't be a huge deal.
Thanks for your input

Thought of using a workbench? It's got the planks texture on the bottom, admittedly, but that would be facing the ground, yes?

That is a challenge. Consider that you only need a block with one special 'face' and you can put them back to back. Pumpkin, crafting table, furnace, dispenser.
It's definitely tough.
Or maybe use rails, signs, vines to look like the bark and any block can be the center wood?

As always, you're full of good ideas. Pumpkins should work perfectly...I'm pretty sure.
And as always, redstone is making the map very laggy. I wish Mojang would fix that.
Hey, Ron. Sorry if I'm bothering you, and you don't have to answer if you don't want to (I'll probably be able to solve this on my own, but I'd like a second opinion first) but I want some advice on a map I'm making:
In short, I'm making an adventure map that has a mod in it similar to Rick (in specifics, this mod) to avoid having super long notes (and by long, I mean long, I put a fair amount of work into my notes, I want the characters to be well-developed so the player will have more incentive to save them, and the map will have another feature that I won't go into detail of [it would take up way too much space probably] that will make the notes about twice as long as usual) and to keep the game-play as fluid as possible. It's very easy to download (especially considering most players already have Modloader installed), but I know that it would still turn off most players. However, I really don't want to make two versions (one with the mod, one without it and instead just has super long notes) since I'd have to retype the incredibly long notes (my computer can just barely run Minecraft and Note-pad at the same time, and Mine craft freezes when I try to copy and paste text into a book) because... Well, it would take forever. Plus, the super long notes would probably scare off most users anyways (they're a lot easier to handle in book form and most users are used to incredibly short notes).
Should I just go ahead and make only one version with the mod, or make two versions (with the second one's notes probably being a lot less detailed then the modded version)? xP

If you make the map with the mod, and then someone plays it without the mod, will it crash?
If not, you can always add the note files too. And let people decide if they use the mod or the notes.
Hm...I'm trying to modify a painterly pack slightly and whenever I switch to the modified pack the game uses the default Minecraft texture pack. I'm turning to you for help since you've made many texture packs in the past.
All I've done is used paint to modify iron_1.png slightly under the "armor" folder.

Since it's a book mod, I'm 90% sure it won't crash- I'll test it out before I post the map, though.
If it doesn't crash, then yeah, I'll go ahead and do that. If not... Eh, I'll go ahead and suffer through making two modes. :s xD Thanks, Ron.
Review Summary:
Quite enjoyable puzzle map centered around Ender Pearls, but taking advantage of many Minecraft functions.
There is at least one point I believe is unpassable without cheating.
Which map? Block Museum? I don't see it in my queue and I scrolled back through this thread to December - don't see a request for it. I can add it now, but it may be a while before I can get to it...
Edit: Nevermind, I found it in my PMs. Adding you to the queue.
