Help! When I was going through the item properties tutorial, and testing out the lightning, IntelliJ started complaining that there wasn't an if statement before the else. Code looks like this:
public class ItemStarlightStriker extends ModConstructor {
public ItemStarlightStriker(String name, CreativeTabs tab, int size) {
super (name, tab, size);
}
@Override
public ActionResult<ItemStack> onItemRightClick(World worldIn, EntityPlayer playerIn, EnumHand handIn) {
if (!worldIn.isRemote) {
RayTraceResult pos = playerIn.rayTrace(100, 20);
double x = pos.getBlockPos().getX();
double y = pos.getBlockPos().getY();
double z = pos.getBlockPos().getZ();
worldIn.addWeatherEffect(new EntityLightningBolt(worldIn, x, y, z, true));
return new ActionResult(EnumActionResult.SUCCESS, new ItemStack(this));
else{
return new ActionResult(EnumActionResult.FAIL, new ItemStack(this));
}
}
}
}
I'm trying to do the item tutorial but for some reason the src/main/java folder works just fine but src/main/resources won't put anything into hierarchy and it won't show anything but empty packages, any ideas?
During Configurations after I created Ref.java and put everything in it I got the error:
Mod cannot be resolved to a type
Some help would be nice and full code screenshots would be nice to look at also. I don't find all of your instructions very clear. Thank you in advance.
Hey there, awesome tutorial so far. I've managed to add the block and item. I have a couple of pieces of feedback that I think will help other newcomers:
1. I took it as an exercise for the reader to remember to add imports with Ctrl+Shift+O, so it wasn't a big deal that you didn't keep explicitly instructing me to do so, but there was no mention of _which_ class to import whenever there was ambiguity. For example, when extending the Item class and then adding the import, there are about four different classes called Item. I took an educated guess and chose the vanilla Minecraft one, and that seemed to do the trick, but it might catch others out.
2. In the blocks tutorial, you didn't mention that the ModBlock class needs to extend Block. Again, someone with a bit of experience or good observation might figure it out, but it would probably help to add that.
I'm just finishing off the Blocks tutorial now, and troubleshooting the block texture, which doesn't seem to want to show up, so I'll keep the feedback coming in.
So the trouble I'm having with the texture might be coming down to an incorrect guess I made about the tut_block item JSON file.
At this point of the Blocks tutorial:
Next is the item block model. Let's steal from "assets.minecraft.models.item.diamond_ore.json" as well.
{
"parent": "tut:block/tut_block"
}
This model specifies that we want to render the model just like the block model, but in our inventory.
It doesn't mention what to call this file. My guess was to call it tut_block.json and put it in the assets.tut.models.item package, but that doesn't seem to have worked.
Actually, I'm not sure if it is a problem with the item or the block, since the block itself also doesn't have a texture when placed. So it could be that the item is rendering exactly as it should in the inventory, but the block itself is not getting the texture applied.
Maybe add links back to the other tutorials from within each tutorial. Perhaps via a footer/header? Or just an index page? It's a bit haphazard to have to come back to the forum post, and keep two tabs open to move about.
(Edit) WOOOPS, nevermind!!! silly me, just click sidebar, and wham. A wealth of everything right at my fingertip!
p.s. You're awesome for keeping this up to date! I love how simple you make a lot of things, and go into all sorts of aspects! Even assets! <3
First, I'd like to say thank you for this modding tutorial. I have some of the basics of Java down, and I want to get into Minecraft modding both to make mods and to solidify my capabilities with Java.
However, I'm having a bit of an issue with the Items portion of the tutorial.
#1.
Near the end of the Items tutorial, we are instructed to create "tut_item.json" inside of "assets.tut.models.item".
Then we need to create a texture inside of "assets.tut.textures.items".
I'm uncertain if the folder inside of "textures" should be "items" or "item" - and similar for "models.[item or items]".
(in short: models.item/items and textures.item/items - which one? Is it item for models but items for textures?)
#2.
For the texture, I researched how to extract textures from Minecraft. I copied the diamond texture, painted a star onto it via gimp, and saved it as tut_item.png.
From researching it seems this is the correct filetype to include in Eclipse, but the issue is demonstrated below with purple-black cubes.
==
To help elucidate my issue(s), I have attached two images:
-An image of the ingame result: a purple-black cube with the ingame name result (tut:tut_item#inventory)
-An image of my Eclipse setup for the mod, complete with the hierarchy of files. It includes an error in the log, as well.
I've also looked at some open-source projects and double-checked the steps for the items tutorial (to mimic the structure and ensure that everything's correct), but the issue persists.
I also have my console log here.

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM warning: Using incremental CMS is deprecated and will likely be removed in a future release
Sorry to bother. Want to figure this out!
===
EDIT:
Used some other tutorials and figured out some of the issues.
Name issue due to needing an "en_US.lang" file - also in a future tutorial in this very thread!
Texture wasn't showing due to, I think, name issues (item*itemname*) as well as having one package not in the correct hierarchy.
Also figured out the log a bit more, which helped a bunch.
Note that I haven't dug into the registry event pathway myself, mostly due to seeing it as a "you want to do all your blocks exactly the same way? then its easy!" and not having blocks that all need to be done the same way (seriously, every example I've seen is pushing blocks/items into an array, then iterate over the array at least three times: once to register the blocks, once to register the items, and once to register item models).
I will probably continue to use the GameRegistry until they physically remove it.

Apparently I'm a complete and utter jerk and come to this forum just like to make fun of people, be confrontational, and make your personal life miserable. If you think this is the case, JUST REPORT ME. Otherwise you're just going to get reported when you reply to my posts and point it out, because odds are, I was trying to be nice.
Unfortunately, I've run into another issue. Any assistance I find online seems to only apply to older versions of minecraft.
My blocks do not render in the world. I've compared my code to the code suggested in the tutorials, as well as the code in other open source mods, and I can't tell the difference.
New update everyone! Creating new tutorials! Most is setting up with JetBrains IntelliJ and using better setup code but most of the tutorials that I have done before like the crafting/smelting, tools, oregen, armor, and item props are basically the same, but I got plans coming soon such as multi-sided textures (working on that right now!) and metadata items and even mobs and mob AI! So look forward to some new tutorials soon!

If you would like to get a hold of me somehow, then my discord is @Alex Couch#5275.
You can make that a slight bit more better by doing this:
ItemBlock itemblock = new ItemBlock(block).setRegistryName(block.getRegistryName());
GameRegistry.register(itemblock);
Also, you did things backwards. You're registering the block and item only on the client but registering the model on both sides. (Check looksee what you put inside the if(side == client) check)

Yeah I'm still getting things figured out with the whole client/server side thing. I'll update today! Thanks!

Help! When I was going through the item properties tutorial, and testing out the lightning, IntelliJ started complaining that there wasn't an if statement before the else. Code looks like this:

+lStewieAl Thanks so much!

Also, the lightning doesn't do any damage. It would be awesome if you made a tutorial on entities so I could create lasers and custom lightning!

I'm trying to do the item tutorial but for some reason the src/main/java folder works just fine but src/main/resources won't put anything into hierarchy and it won't show anything but empty packages, any ideas?
A custom enchantments tutorial would be awesome!

During Configurations after I created Ref.java and put everything in it I got the error:
Some help would be nice and full code screenshots would be nice to look at also. I don't find all of your instructions very clear. Thank you in advance.

I want tutorial to add meta data to item/block and change the meta data when something happened(like sponge and wet sponge).
Hello!
==

Sorry to bother. Want to figure this out!
===
Thanks!
What I want you to tutorial is the enchantments.
I've run into an issue with my test item and it's naming.
When ingame, the item's name appears as "item.test_item.name" instead of "Test Item".
I've looked ahead in the tutorials to find a solution, and I notice you made a language file in the Creative Tabs tutorial.
I've done this myself, but it hasn't affected the name ingame at all.
I have exactly zero modding experience and have no clue what to do to fix this.
As you'd imagine, a mod in which the items all start with "item." and end with ".name" is not a fantastically appealing mod.
Images depicting the issue:
That was exactly what was wrong. Thanks so much!
EDIT:
Unfortunately, I've run into another issue. Any assistance I find online seems to only apply to older versions of minecraft.
My blocks do not render in the world. I've compared my code to the code suggested in the tutorials, as well as the code in other open source mods, and I can't tell the difference.
And here is an image of what's showing ingame.
You'd be correct sir. Thank you. I'm simply an idiot, apparently.
All amateur modders take this as a lesson. Spellcheck before troubleshooting.
Are you still doing tutorials

This bit here:
You can make that a slight bit more better by doing this:
Also, you did things backwards. You're registering the block and item only on the client but registering the model on both sides. (Check looksee what you put inside the if(side == client) check)
Yeah I'm still getting things figured out with the whole client/server side thing. I'll update today! Thanks!
