Fourth Generation consoles were my favorite (that would be late 80s/early 90s) - at least as far as quality within game was concerned... I have to admit though, newer era games have much better to offer in terms of 'multiplayer', but we have lost a lot in terms of storyline, depth, and even gameplay in some cases.
You see a resurgance against this, or even staple brands survive against this (depth in the Elder scrolls series is there, storyline in several titles, and gameplay is superb in a few too)...but as far as your 'game of the era' goes, ie the status quo that is marketed most frequently - the 4th gen consoles definitely win out (genesis/snes/gameboy/game gear), with 5th gen consoles pulling a close second. (followed by 3rd gen consoles)
If you have a favorite era, doesn't mean you hate other eras... just means you think one 'did it better'.
every era is really good, just the most inspirational was the 2000-2006ish around this time is when all the really awesome mods were coming out. An example would be the mod Natural Selection for Half Life.
You missed the 2004-2011 era. Portal 2 and Pkmn Ruby and sapphire and other amazing stuff was in that period. Also TF2. But every era has its flaws.

My favorite game of all time would be League, and I'm playing that now, so I guess my favorite era would be now.
