I'm starting to notice a lot of old threads getting Necro'd back to life, some of which I am at fault of as well. However, can we start stopping doing this? Before you post, check the time stamp of the last post. If it's older than 6 months, just make a new thread. I'm seeing threads from 2011 popping back up to life and there is absolutely no reason for that.
We are now in 1.5.1, so a lot of threads don't apply anymore, like using wheat on pigs to get them to follow you and minecart mechanics. If you agree, say "I will necro no more."
It depends on the thread. If it's 3 years old and you still have significant new information to add, there's nothing wrong with posting in it, although you could probably make a new thread. The general rule for necroing is that if you have new information to add, it's okay to post. If it's over a month old you could probably make a new thread for it instead but whatevs
I see a lot of people complaining on necro'ing them, so I just was making a comment on them. Never thought you could add information to a thread, but a lot of them are what I call "opinion" threads, where you share your thoughts.
People search for an issue or idea through google, or maybe even the forums search, and a topic will pop up no matter the date it was created. It is somewhat human nature to assume it will be recent because the issue/idea is recent to yourself.
There is nothing that can be done to stop this, short of reporting (useless) necro posts. Further things, such as automatically/manually locking topics after xx date, could turn out to be more destructive than good.
((keyword, useless, some necros can be good))
I would like to add, that complaining about necroing is just as, if not more destructive as the original necro. The topic gets bumped back up to the top again, and more likely to have more posts, etc etc. Best off staying quiet and reporting.

You're not doing anything wrong here mind you, it is always a good thing to ask questions.
I know, but I don't really like setting off chains of probably Red vs. Blue (Goes by many names, but this is easier). Now I just started a Pro Necro vs. No Necro discussion.
As for me, I don't care, but it does irritate me when I'm posting a reply and some guy comes up, quotes me and says "Thanks for the grave digging, necromancer."
