Alright, so right now, bumping a post for no reason is against the rules - and I understand that. I have an idea that will prevent a thread to be swallowed up in the forum, and give players the ability to bump a thread.
Here's how it works: There will be a button somewhere on the thread near "Watch Thread" is, and make it so only the creator of the thread can hit it. To prevent spam of the button, make a "cooldown" of about 10-20 minutes.
I have seen a similar method on other popular forums, and it actually worked great. I think this is a great idea because it will also prevent people from posting nonsense just to bump their thread.
Thanks,
Fitifong
EDIT: This would only be affected in the "Survival Servers" section.
The idea is to NOT bump, not to find a way to bump without posting "bump."
Bumping is the act of putting your thread above other active threads, when your thread is not active. You, the OP, cannot make the thread active. To selfishly put your own thread above those in which the community is actively discussing is what is against the rules. (I say "your," but it's only an example.)
I hope that clears it up. There will never be an official, sanctioned way to bump.

Oops, forgot to mention that it could only be for the servers forums, because there isn't really an active posts going on in those threads, and that means the only ones being active are the ones with a whitelist since they need to post.
Though I do agree with Sacheverell LightWarriorK. Bumping this way would be bad, as it would be hard to monitor if someone was just sitting there bumping all day. Unless it alerted mods somehow, which would be bad because mods would have a few thousand notifications for bumps...

Also, what would the point of a bump button be, if it sends a notification to a mod, who will then warn you? Sounds like a "report yourself" button to me xD
But what if the report variable was something like "Has bumped 3 times without getting a reply" or something like that?

Essentially it would be, since you are not supposed to bump anyways. There are few exceptions to this rule, such as support, but if people had the ability to bump without others knowing they were bumping, it would quickly get out of hand. Especially every 20 minutes. Threads dying from lack of interest is how this forum works, not from who can bump it the most.

Guys, I forgot to mention it in the original post (and I put an edit in), I think that the Survival Servers section needs that bump button (and only that section) because if there is a decent server that doesn't have a whitelist, players don't have to post, and therefore you have to spam your thread with random crap just to get bumped up, which in my opinion, is unfair. I agree that if there was a bump button in all sections, it wouldn't work out.
EDIT: In other words, right now, there are a lot of people spamming their threads in the survival servers section with useless information so they can have players on their server. It's just not the right way to do things.
In the case of the server threads, I don't think the bumping would be too bad. If they bumped (within reason, like once a day), I can't see it doing any harm. But in that case, it would still be better for it to be a post, because then it is easier to check if they are spam bumping, such as hitting it every 30 minutes.

Honestly I'd be more inclined to disallow whitelist spam than allow bumping. Whitelist acceptance could easily be done via PM, and ultimately contributes little (if anything) to the thread.
There used to be a bump topic button. Yeah, I miss that.
Not here, nor on the old software. It didn't exist here.
Even for server threads, bumping is a no-no. I don't care how much exposure you want your server to have, everyone has equal rights to be seen, so bumping is not allowed. I'm with Sach that I'd rather see Whitelist applications be done by PM.
My preferred alternative for servers is to move them off the boards completely and onto a system akin to this, that is sortable and filterable, so bumping is irrelevant and people can easily find (for example) which servers are looking for players, which servers have pvp, which servers have won awards, etc. But that would take some custom software to be written and wouldn't happen anytime soon, if at all.

That seems like a better idea, actually. Much better than being in the forums altogether. It would be great if they had even something like that in the form of forums.
I'd rather see something like that implemented in-game.

For the record if I correct you it's not meant maliciously, but if you whine about it I AM laughing at you.

If that were to be planned, it wouldn't be out probably until after release, but that would be cool too.
