This is probably all the reason we will get from Mojang about why they don't host the forum. Someone asked notch about it today on twitter and this was notch's response:
Twitter - (2011-06-26):
{ MartyMacGyver Marty MacGyver @ @notch - I'm surprised Mojang doesn't own the forum and the wiki... }
notch Markus Persson @ @MartyMacGyver - Waaay too much work. And when stuff like this happens, it'd be our headache.
-------
I also wonder why Mojang seems to never actually read their "official" forum..
Oh well. This is a good forum and, most importantly, has what seems like the largest number of fellow minecrafters doing there thing here. It also houses the Minecraft Wiki, which since it is the only form of documentation for Minecraft, it is indispensable. I certainly felt that over the last four days.
This event reminded me to save a copy of the Crafting wiki page, at the least, to my own HD as a reference just in case... I would love to be able to just download the entire Minecraft Wiki every once in a while. Maybe Mojang could talk curse into zipping it up for us since, well, since they aren't providing any other documentation. You have to think of the customers! :wink.gif:
i think the forums should loose anything to do with curse so it dosn't go down again
Curse is one of the biggest gaming networks on the internet. No one can expect a hardware failure or a SAN disk corruption. They just happen. You think you can manage 13 other websites? Curse did the right thing to do, and tell us what was wrong.
@MineCrak There are ways to download an entire wiki. I don't remember how, but I have done it before.
I feel bad for curse, since threads like these aren't just happening on this forum, but on most of the other ones they have and also for the fact that more threads like these are going to come up on most of the other forums.
Now I haven't been here as long as some people, I joined in Febuary of this year (As Nath99, I'm using a separate account)
Now, I don't know anything about Server Handling, or Server Maintenance, or Server malfunctions, but think about it this way.
In the past, Minecraft and it's forums weren't so popular, so they did not attract as much of a revenue compared to today
Today, Minecraft and it's forums are very popular, meaning they attract much more of a revenue.
In the past, the revenue for the Forums and the Wiki were taken out of the pockets of Volunteers such as critic squid, it might not have been as much as today, but it still was a lot, and they all had to pitch in money from their pockets. I don't know the volunteers very well, but I'm sure that they have to pay for housing and food two, and eventually their pockets might run thin.
Now curse came along, and relieved them of the debt, added small little adds on the top and bottom of the page (which aren't very distracting) and gives the server a little more of a boost
Again, I don't know much about Server/Forum Handling, but I do know a lot about the rule of life "**** Happens", do you think **** doesn't just Crash, we are lucky, apparently in the past, there where a lot more errors like this
All in All
Stop your Whining, or would you like to pay to sign up, maybe even a subscription fee or have a lot more adds for this forum, since I'm pretty sure there won't be a lot or enough generous donators to keep up this forum, unlike wikipedia is able to do. And if you would like this forum to Quit Curse, where do we go for this forum to be hosted?
Again, I reiterate, you don't get to decide who the forums are hosted by. You all have not paid, you are not admins, so shut it.
The forums + wiki could be taken down, and you can't do anything about it because you're not admins. It is up to the owners of this site to choose whoever they want to host the forums and what they do with it, because it's theirs.
The fact that the OP got +4 rep for such an idiotic post reminded me of something Obi Wan Kenobi once said,
"Who's more foolish? The fool, or the fool who follows him?"
If it wasn't for Curse, the forums would be down half the time.
If the forums are slow for you, get more RAM
Hardware malfunctions happen to anybody. You are implying that Curse should have prophecised the hardware failure, and take their magic wand and fix everything in 5 mintues, becuase in other hosting sites, that's what happens. (Yeah right)
We promise that within our power, such a malfunction and long downtime won't happen again.
The software isn't the problem.
The advertisment banners aren't annoying. All sites have them, and if you weren't so nick-picky, you wouldn't care for them. These ads help fund the forum, and they pay the bills and put food into the mouths of Citricsquid and the other site admins who work directly with Curse.
You aren't required to read the ads.
It's better than video ads.
4 days of downtime isn't so bad.
You people complain about Curse, how Curse tried so hard to fix the hardware, how Curse offered to host the forums when citricsquid couldn't afford it anymore. How Curse this, and How Curse that. Seriously guys and gals, Curse offered to host the forums. What does it say for us when we want chocolate cake when cake was given to us already? Didn't anybody tell you, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you"?
Are you THAT spoiled?

These hardware crashes happen with everything. If they got off of curse, they probably would lose the site, until they found a new hoster. Curse will most likely never have another hardware crash.
They falsely promised it would "be up in a few hours" & "be up by Saturday", only to have it go on for another four days.
The initial time came up after the first crash, and then another part malfunctioned, which really screwed them up. The "Be up on Saturday" was an at the earliest time if you read it. "As early as Saturday" was what was said, not by Saturday.
Quite honestly, this was an unexpected problem. It could have been prevented, but these things happen. I've used curse for other things for years. They aren't perfect, but I don't seem to have the problems everyone else has with them.

Thank you Tehpillowstar, that explains how I feel as well.
Running a large fan-site is a heck of a task, buying server equipment, looking after the servers, running costs (electricity bills, internet bills), paying employees, codeing, moderation, account adminstration, dealing with hardware falilures, buying software, providing support ETC.

That is a-lot of info to back-up and transfer, a slow and taxing proccess.
As I say again, if you can do a better job, try making a better forum, good luck with that.
