Ok so i have never played minecraft before etc etc. I want to be able to play with my friend. How Do i go about doing this properly? When i go to minecraft site it says buy Java edition and comes with free windows 10 edition key. Do I buy that? Or is there no need to buy the game? I was under the impression that minecraft was free for some reason.
Also, does my friend have to have the Pc version as well for us to play or can he play minecraft pocket edition on his ipad while i play on on pc?
You have to purchase minecraft first of all and yes, you have to have the same version. After this comes, either making a small server of your own or finding a server that you and your friend want to play on.
So, how does it work with servers now. Is it pretty much mandatory to get the monthly subscriptions and have your own private realm if you dont want your buildings ruined by others etc? Or can you find empty servers that my friend and I can build on without peopel bothering us?

I am extremely inactive nowadays and haven't actually played more than 15 minutes in the last year, but if you look you might be able to find a good server that fits your needs. Also, I highly discourage realms, unless you absolutely need the convenience factor. Buying a server is cheaper per month in a lot of cases. If you'd prefer to keep it simple, go with a realm. Otherwise, a cheap server is a decent option too. This is assuming your friend is also on the java version. This is where Microsoft's naming really gets frustrating. Ask him if he has windows 10 edition or java edition.
My friend is young and dosnt know much about comptuers etc. He has an ipad and a windows 10 pc but only plays on ipad so far. What do you mean buy a server instead?

You can't play with him on pc edition then. Purchase the Windows 10 edition, or the Pocket Edition.
Hello minecrusty,
With Minecraft Java Edition, it is specifically to play with other PC players. Although with Minecraft Windows 10 Edition, you can play with people on the phone, and your computer. When you buy Minecraft Java Edition it gives you a redeemable code for Minecraft Windows 10 Edition in the windows store (You must have a windows operating system!).
Alternatively, you can search for "Minecraft Windows 10 Edition" in the windows store and buy it there if you'd like to play with your phone friend without buying the java edition.
But what about this private server instead of paying for he monthly subscription. Im not going to pay monthly just so i can play with my friend without some random person coming along and joining us or breaking our stuff etc. IS there no alternatives so we can play privately?
