I usually get lost in them (i know, pretty pathetic), then spend around 10 minutes to find my way back to the surface. How do you shape/mark your caves so that this doesn't happen?
Well sometimes the cave splits into different levels and paths, that might be a bit confusing tho.
True, I find signs to work best :biggrin.gif: They require a lot of wood, but whatever, I have enough and so should everyone.
Also, it's always good to make your exit really visible, maybe make it into a big room so that it's easy to find, with maybe some glowstone/lava/water/whatever to mark it (or redstone torches...?)
The entrance to the cave im exploring is like a hole in the ground. I could go all fancy and make like "stations"+ add lots of signs to it. Thank you for your wonderful information btw. :smile.gif:
Although placing torches only on the right side is better than what I've been doing, I've found my trick works just as well. I simply place 2 blocks down in the tunnel side by side, one dirt, one cobblestone. The dirt one always points back in the direction of the surface. :smile.gif:
If you dont know a trick, If you always hug the left (or right) wall you will eventually come across the exit, it may take a while but it could be worth it
I light them up until there are no shadows. If I get lost? I always keep a fresh Iron Pickaxe to dig an escape staircase to the surface. Though I normally dig through 3 other super caves while building that staircase.

The next time an authority asks me, "What could possibly have given you such a lack of respect for the value of human life?" I will respond, "Sir, have you even BEEN to the internet?"
I tend to use Redstone Dust to mark my way out. That staircases are built out of cobblestone since it only occurs naturally around a dungeon, if I see either of those two I know I'm going in the right direction out.

Yeah, someone last week mentioned using redstone, I bonked myself on the forehead and now carry a stack. I have a double chest full and never (yet) use it for much of anything. It does pile up. 3 of them, 2 and a gap and then another, makes kind of an arrow
But on topic, I don't mark my caves at all, unless I've been stuck in one for an hour, I place a bunch or torches, then I dig a stairway up, and exit by digging up. So if i get stuck in there again. I'll have an idea where to exit. Just look for the torches and stairs.
i've tried doing several things, like the old 'torches on the right rule', but even then sometimes it didn't work, so the only thing i've definitely found to work every time is this:
every time i come across a junction or a for in the caves, or an area that looks like a deadend, but i have to climb straight up to get back to the exit, i stack cobblestone like this:
with the single, lone cobble stone pointing the way back out. if i have to go up or down, then i usually add a few more, like:
[]
so the directional stone points up at an angle.
it works like a charm 100% of the time, so if you want, i could send you screenshots

you follow the stairs down to the good area, follow them back up to safety
It's super effective!
Pointless thread has fainted!
This is why i love MC fourm's moderators
Split? Make a little L bend pointing towards the exit
Venit, quessit, induravit.

on dirt blocks? Didn't think they would plant in stone, and if they are just bobbing up and down above the ground they will despawn in 5 minutes.

On dirt blocks, yes. I always seem to have so much dirt, it's not like I'm wasting anything. =P
