So, when are we getting elevators, since every fast alternative (water ladders, boats, etc.) has been destroyed by this update? I don't know anything about programming in Java (do know C# and some basic C++), or how the game is programmed, but it can't be that hard. For the guide rails, just do some combination of ladders and rails, then have an elevator that has an up/down switch, and have special guide rails where the elevator will stop (work like the powered rails).

Well I can tell you from experience, Java is very similar to C#. But I doubt it's so much the programming language itself that's the stumbling block as it is the game framework itself you'd have to work with, and I can't claim to have a clue how that works.
I don't know if you've looked into the piston mod that's rumored to be in line for addition into vanilla Minecraft, but from what I've seen you should be able to use them to shoot yourself upwards quite rapidly (though it's not really an elevator per say). Add the new hatches into the mix and you have a way to catch yourself at the top if you can time it out right with redstone repeaters...
