Yesterday, Phoronix had encouraging news about the prospect of Steam for Linux: photo evidence ofLeft 4 Dead running on Ubuntu 11.10 with AMD Catalysts drivers. Today, the site followed up with video footage of that same scenario, posting a hastily shot clip to show that Valve is indeed making progress -- slow as it may be -- on porting the game engine to Linux. Got 14 seconds? Check out the video demo below the break.

I'm actually really excited for this. I personally use Windows 7 Professional because I need to run Sony Vegas and recording Minecraft on Linux is an awful idea (no fraps equivalent there), but I used to be a big Ubuntu user. Getting Steam is the first step of a long journey to make Linux a viable gaming OS. Sure it won't have all the games that Windows and even OSX has, but it's a start. Oh and the driver support is a nice bonus =D
I'm a bit confused. I see nothing in that article that provides any evidence of steam and Linux. I see a valve game that appears to be running on Linux, but that says absolutely nothing about steam being on the platform. People (including those behind the article) seem to think it is somehow implied, but I don't see how.
Considering Steam recently going to OSX this isn't too much of a stretch.
They are likely having issues though, for obvious reasons.
Though, I don't really see why it would come to Linux. It wouldn't be the most profitable choice. While Valve may port their games to Linux, many games will simply not work on it, so the Linux user-base will make less sales.
It's probably more of just wanting to broaden your userbase.
Valve has enough money at this point to do pretty much whatever they want, even if they don't expect a full return or any profit from it.
Discuss!

i'm not sure what to be shocked about the most, Steam on Linux or AMD drivers on Linux

Most people who want gaming use windows, so I doubt there will be many people interested in steam on linux.
