Ok, the fact that they sold out in 3 seconds should say something right there.
Plus, it's a voluntary act to purchase a ticket and go to the convention. This isn't the government stealing your tax dollars and redistributing them: this is a private entity selling tickets to an event people can either go to, or not go to.
This convention is going to be special. It's small. The people are actually going to be there, and this is a time when the game and the convention are still "special". If it loses that, it'll become another cheap yearly event at the same location, and become mediocre. I don't want MineCraft to ever become mediocre. When my friend first told me to get it, I was like "this seems boring".
I didn't get it then, but now it's more than a videogame to me, and a lot of other people, and I'm going to Minecon, I have my own server that I've paid out for a year in advance, and I have had more enjoyment from Minecraft that just about any other game I can think of. I had a SNES when it was new too, so that's a long time of gaming.
I don't expect this to be mediocre. The venue is perfect: a huge destination, with tons of accommodation, at a massive convention center.
My only complaint is that the website for ordering the tickets SUCKS completely. Worst ticket(worst anything) online buying experience I've ever had! If you're going to complain, at least complain about the right things. Buying the tickets, refreshing the page, hoping I'd actually get the tickets it said I had added to my cart was infuriating!
And how exactly are they ripping people off by not even making a profit at the convention they're putting together for people to voluntarily buy tickets to and attend?
It's probably pretty pricey to rent the convention hall, fly people in, fly stuff in, set it up, and do everything they're going to have to do to make the convention awesome. The ticket sales only get them $1.25 million, which sounds like a lot of money, but it's really not when you're trying to put together a massive convention. I don't doubt the guy who said they lose money by hosting it.
Greed is wanting something but not being willing to pay for it. That sounds like you.

Tickets out in 3 seconds, that's a lot of rich kids! Meh, maybe Notch will look at a map and see a foreign country called Canada. even then tickets will be wayy to much so go figure
You probably couldn't afford them could you? $150 is not greedy. I once saw a convention that cost $300 per person. Sounds like you were too late for your tickets. It probably costs more to hold Minecon than it does to get in.

I don't see any proof that they are running the Orlando Minecon at a loss. In fact Orlando is known as the convention capital because it is so cheap. So I doubt they are running it at a loss. I was not surprised they picked such a cheap place to have the convention. It certainly was not by accident.
That being said, I am going to Minecon. My boyfriend, a friend, and I tried to get tickets and my boyfriend was able to snag them. And it doesn't matter to me at all if they do it for a profit or run at a loss. However, I refuse to thank a company for letting me buy their product. That is just downright silliness!

They've been running in the red in the past conventions. Let me break down this year's fees and such: Total revenue without deductions of fees was: $1,125,000 Everbrite Transaction Fees of 2.5%: -$28,125 Everbrite $.99 transaction fee per ticket: -$7,425 Credit Processing Fees of 3%: -$33,750 TOTAL FEES from Everbrite and Credit Companies: -$69,300 TOTAL Revenue BEFORE Swedish Sales Tax and AFTER Fees Total from the line above: $1,055,700 Swedish sales tax of 25%: -$263,925 TOTAL AFTER Sales Tax: $791,775
After all that, you still need to pay for staff plane tickets, food, lodging, setup equipment, and the actual convention center rental. Then you need to cleanup after all that. So what's this about not running into a loss?

Do you realize how complex and how many people are involved with putting a convention together? All these people are working very hard to put on a big show and it takes time and we all know time is money. I wrote brief paragraph about the costs in another thread titled "Reality check for Minecon" and this is what I wrote:
"Ticket prices are way too high! Well, It's a two day convention in an air conditioned building that they rent. Venues charge a fee for events, Mojang hires consultants and organizers to make Minecon happen, production teams have to set up for the event, etc etc etc... Have you taken a look at ticket prices at nearby attraction in Orlando? Look at Disney World's Magic Kingdom, SeaWorld and Universal Studios per day ticket prices. Mojang is about the same price if not lower per day than they admission to some of those theme parks."
I did even more research about conventions of several types and here's what I found:
This blog is from a woman who was chairwoman of hosting a murder novel convention. She mentions tickets being at $225 and the total amount of attendees they expected for the convention was about 400 people! - http://www.murderati...tion-costs.html
The average cost to attend a ONE (1) day convention = $273. This is coming from a website that has data on conventions from all over the world and crunches the numbers. - http://trade-shows.f...n-or-conference
totally agree with you bro! that is a ripoff! ive seen other cases of greed also. for example, $200 for an iphone, and $1500 for a good computer! im dissapointed with mojang, they can do better than this.
Things cost money, just because it wasn't in some peoples price range does't mean that it was overpriced. I can guarantee you, if you had tickets, you would be saying the same thing I said or nothing at all.

Just saying, iPhones dont cost $200, if you see one that price its a scam! :3
And you could probably custom build a great computer at the price of $1000, even the Alienware X51 isnt $1500, your just horrible at pricing -> and cant handle money well.

If you think the iPhone when you buy it from a carrier is 200$, then you haven't actually calculated it correctly. Over the course of two years you pay almost triple the cost of the actual unlocked iPhone.
Mojang runs it at a loss as I've pointed out and everyone else has. There's no denying that and Mojang has said that directly. And tickets selling fast isn't greed. There are fire safety laws involved to limit the number of people within a room.
Now that is what i call greed!
Plus, they sold out in 3 secs
