This update looks pretty dang cool. A couple new biomes/technical biomes, and some new things, such as flowers and such. What I really love about this update is that they're trying to make the game more bigger, which I love so much. Also, fixing the lighting issues, I really appreciate that.

Ever wanted to play Minecraft on your own difficulty? I did too, and now I'm getting better by practicing at my own pace!
Give a man a fish and He'll eat for a day...
Give a gamer a fish and He'll complain about how the game is now ruined...
We still don't fully understand the function of the sunflower or other grow-able flowers yet, so I'm choosing to withhold judgement on how ruined the game is. If I may wish for a moment I'd like to see the Ocean biome get some much needed love in 1.7.
They have updates very, very shortly. 4J studios said 2 months ago, that update is near, and here we are, 2 months later, no update!
Same goes for PC, "Mojang", update are very, very small and we need to wait MONTHS for them, when modders do that in 48 hours.
Small? Not really. Most of the updates we had were actually quite big. Might seem small when you pick at one or the other item. They're actually quite big. And obviously you'll wait months for them to make them run in your Minecraft world without removing items from your storage chest or to delete your world by mistake. Would you want that to happen?
"MOJANG! MY WORLD GOT DELETED! RAGE! RAGE! FIX THIS UPDATE NOW!" - Your response every week along with others. Best to wait than to rage.
I actually kind of like the small pointless stuff. It is fun trying to get everything in the game in survival, and with the new updates there is always more stuff to get. I am looking forward to getting a field of sunflowers and other new stuff for my survival world.

These are probably better described as 'impact particles' as they are generated by your character impacting the ground. As to why... it's eye candy, like all other particles, are and will probably be disable-able as the others are currently.
This seems cool, but there is one thing I don't understand...
There are so many things that would be so much more helpful, yet they add all these random things that aren't nearly as helpful. Again, I do think this is cool, and could be a good addition, but just think of all the other things they could be adding...
Oh, and I also think that the texture does need some touching up on. It's not the worst thing ever, but it just looks a bit out-of-place.
There's no confusion to what direction you're looking, you hit F3 and it tells you right there. Here's another pointless and overhyped addition to the game.
Lolwut. Is this a joke? No? Okay. Sunflowers. Cool. I was hoping for a biome, not a flipping flower. On the topic of falling particles.... SWEEEEEEEET!

Kinda pointless I'm pretty sure people want sharks or new biomes more than sunflowers.
Meanwhile at Mojang...
What should we call this update?
I KNOW! The Sunflower Update!
That is why I will always prefer Terraria over Minecraft. Terraria's updates add much more content in the amount of time Minecraft does. Just look at the new Terraria update that's coming along, IT'S RIDICULOUS!!! Not to mention that in 1.1 they added a whole new aspect to Terraria known as Hardmode and 4 new bosses!!!

I'm fairly certain the directional use of sunflowers is being overhyped here probably just for humor sake, also these are only one part of 1.7 ( a biome update, see the wiki for some of the planned features ).
There are two confirmed new biomes for 1.7: Clay Canyons and Redwood Forests. See the below link to read about all the confirmed changes in 1.7:

They are free updates.

Don't say that bro, it's their choice, don't update your minecraft if you don't want these awesome features
