Sounds interesting, but I kinda wish they would have picked Forge instead of Bukkit. Will I be able to use IndustrialCraft2, Redpower2, Buildcraft, and Railcraft with bukkit?
If so, then YAY!
if not, then BOO!
Redpower and IC2 (which are both SMP mods, thanks to Forge) are the best things to happen to Minecraft since Survival mode.
If Bukkit is joining, I wish for only one thing, do not bring the ******** into the game that will stop Minecraft SMP being 'true' vanilla.
You do know you can just not install plug ins except stuff like ptweaks or no lagg to increase performance and keep it vanilla right? Cause no one is forcing you to make it so your players can become vampires or fly on magic carpets.

Give them up? HELL NO.
actually if you did a little looking people have modified the forge and modloader mp stuff to work with bukkit already, http://www.mcportcentral.co.za/index.php?topic=1360.0 so if they do pay attention maybe they should work with these people also
Bukkit is not taking over Mojang, and I don't think Mojang is rolling over and dying for everything Bukkit, they are working together, so you can expect a program that works for both SSP and SMP.
As for other mods like Forge, I can't see them, and other like them, just giving up their mods. I don't see why they wouldn't just convert their mod to the new API so we can use their stuff too, as they would of had to anyway whether or not the Bukkit team had joined Mojang.
not sure why people are worried, working together means they'll form a middle ground to help the goals they want. Mojang wants a mod API, bukkit can do it but lack resources Mojang had. Therefor it was a no brainer for them to coexist into 1 to get the job done and tbh if this allows instant patches for mods after a new minecraft update isn't that what we all want? not having to wait weeks to just have mo creatures mod update into 1.2 but rather be streamlined into immediately?
oops. brought it up. not good for the release date to talk about it. i jinxes them!
On the positive side, these are people who are experienced modders and understand the mod community. I know that some folks have problems with these particular developers, but I hope that is just jealousy over the fact that they weren't picked instead.
If the "release date" of the API is pushed back because it is something worthy of being called a true API that will make mods work seamlessly into Minecraft, I'm all for that. That the emphasis is being placed upon the server side so mods will be compatible on multi-player as well as single-player out of the box... that sounds like a good thing to me as well.
Some of the concerns being expressed by a number of mod developers commenting on this thread is justified, but I'm optimistic that this is a very good move on the part of Mojang. They have some money they are willing to spend on developing Minecraft in a major way, and are picking up some of the best talent that already knows the Minecraft codebase in one way or another. That the developers are fans of the game helps only more (as opposed to developers who only cash paychecks and don't care about the software they are working on).
Nooooooooooo... noooooo... no... ugh... I HATE Bukkit servers SO MUCH!!! If they change normal Multiplayer into their crap, then I will officially be... well I'm not going to use language, so I'll just say ANGRY! =P
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I didn't feel like making a good signature, so I just typed this up.

Then, don't go on servers that use Bukkit plugins?
Hey guys, remember when bukkit was really cool? Remember? Before Mojang ruined it? Anyone? Oh, right. No one browses the forums anymore because the joining of Bukkit and Mojang killed minecraft.

So, along wih everything else, does this mean that Vanilla servers will be replaced with Bukkit available on minecraft.net?
Check out the first test of Hasbro's new LOPC!
