WHAT?! Anvils for repairing items, and it costs? And it breaks after a while? But what about putting two damaged items in a crafting grid? That's free! Why can't they extend the use in that?? Flipping 55 pieces of iron and EXP for something that can be done for free? Am I the only one who's annoyed?
Except the free way doesn't keep your enchantments. Are you willing to give up something with Sharpness IV, Looting III, and Fire Aspect II in the free repair or are you willing to spend some EXP to repair AND keep the enchantments?
I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but i downloaded this snapshot and immediatly tried out the new anvil and its enchantment combining...
And i did this on creative, didnt really have xp to throw around on my survival world. so i spawned myself about 25000xp and made a crafting table and placed an anvil, and to my suprise i can only enchant from 1-8 now, and combine those to make better ones.
This makes sence to me, why you would lower this, but lets do the math here...
to get a 4efficency 3unbreaking pickaxe you need...
level 1 + 1 = 2 + ( 1 + 1) = 3 + (( 1 + 1) + ( 1 + 1)) = level 4 efficency, thats 8 diamond pickaxes at level 1 enchantment, you can get 1efficent/1unbreak at level 8 also, so thats anywhere from 8-64 levels for just the pickaxes, let alone the actual combining, and thats not including the unbreaking aspect, another 4 (4-32), so thats already 12-96 levels of xp just for the ingredients! and 36 diamonds, but the good news is, you never have to do this again, until you repair it. thats about 17-20 levels if i remember correctly.
So i think this update is quite the xp waster, luckily i got my 4eff 3unbreak 2fortune a few minutes before downloading this
@xKazlyn
Did you put 15 or more bookcases around the Enchantment table? If so, good
Did you put your anvil between the Enchantment table and the bookcases? If so, bad
Otherwise, it seems that the anvil has a level cap of 39, although I want to try and get around that.....
Anvils??? Hell yeah. But still, there are a few things that I don't like about it: Expensive (55 iron ingots), the amount of levels required to rename an item (around 5 levels), it breaks, IMO
Thank You Vechz for emailing dinnerbone and thank you dinnerbone for adding anvils into the game. Can't wait to make a anvil trap in one of my upcoming maps hopefully
Minecraft it's an Awesome Game and this Snapshot is a real good snapshot, i hope that the new Minecraft will be out soon with every update.
If anyone know when the new MC coming out, reply!
Everyone says the Anvil is worthless because it breaks too easily, but think about it for a moment. Are you really going to be fixing/combining enchantments that often along with renaming stuff?

I think the XP from animal breeding's a great idea. I just REALLY want to see a lot of performance tweaks, Minecraft no longer runs on my Laptop. I haven't played it in 'bout a month :/

good point, why didnt i think of that xD i feel stupid now but i think i was able to get lv30 enhancements on creative without the bookcases, but i still did have the anvil next to it, ill need to test this for myself now xD
Is there any ways to have a working map like rei minimap or any similar ones for a snapshot, I know devs usually don't care about snapshots because they are out each week, but I want to play on snapshots longer, I always end up deleting my save because I'm lost in middle of the woods or in middle of nowhere because I have no maps (don't want that crap they call map created by Mojang, this isn't accurate) I wonder how people can play vanilla without a working map either, the Minecraft universe is so huge and a load of areas look similar...
I am a problem seeker, so I can solve them. When I see a problem, that I did, I try to fix it. When there are problems I can't fix, I ask for help. But when people wants to make problems, even unknowingly, I try to stop them. Sometimes I get hurt, but will stand up after I fall.
I definitely think the anvil requires such a high exp cost. I was experimenting with it, and it is incredibly powerful.
Here's what you can do:
1. Repair enchanted item to full using a non-enchanted item of the same type and material.
2. Make a custom enchanted item combining the enchantments of both.
The way combinations work is that it takes the best compatible enchantments of both. If one has Smite I and the other has Smite IV, the result will be Smite IV.
If one has Smite and the other has Knockback, the result will be a weapon with both Smite and Knockback.
You can overwrite an enchantment you don't want. Say you have a sword with Bane of Arthropods + Looting but you don't like Bane. Yet you have the same material sword with Smite and Knockback. Put the one with Smite in the first slot and it will remove Bane and give you a sword with Smite, Knockback, and Looting.
Some combinations are too powerful it seems, though, and it will refuse to do those. Seems to be mostly on weapons that are max enchanted.
Edit: it also seems that you can increase enchant level as well. I got a pick up from Efficiency II to Efficiency III
They need to fix the Block Breaking Bug. In survvial mode, you can run and just hold the left click- and the blocks will break even without the breaking animation. So as you clear tall grade, you're creating a bunch of 1 x 1 x 1 holes all over the place.
The anvil is to expensive! its 15 lvls just to change the name of something plus the added cost depending on your enchantments I think the rename cost should definitely be lowered!

Anyhow, love the envil, though would like hammers to be crafted and place within Anvil to reduce the Anvil's usage.
