This isn't a fair competition, please explain why there are only 5 entries on the list while there were more than 5 entries submitted. Maybe they aren't that good, but at least put them on the voting list to hear people's opinion?
Okay, I see some people who are saying that shakeandbake's mod is getting more votes just because it's first. There's more to it than just "this is what I saw first". I know that I, for one, carefully looked over each of the finalists before making a decision. I've posted them elsewhere, but I thought that I would share my thoughts on each entry here, to show why I voted the way that I did. Hopefully, this will be helpful to some people, and I fully encourage others to share their reviews of the mods as well. Even better would be if people who do test the mods could pull up videos of them. Sadly my computer can't handle Minecraft and video capture software.
My pick;shakeandbake To me, this one was just the best. I admit, mining Zinc and Copper to make Brass and then making things seems like an unnecessary step, but you can't mine alloy (I think just making things out of copper would have been fine, myself). That aside, though, the mod is great. Recipes make sense, visual style fits, and everything seems useful (excepting goggles, but those are iconic).
As for the others...
tylap566 This one was just strange to me. It seemed to follow a sort of moon logic that, even by Minecraft standards, is a little out there. While clearly steampunk inspired, it wasn't very visually appealing, and I just couldn't follow the sense of why things worked the way they did. In the end, just seemed to be trying too hard in some areas, not enough in others.
slefi I kind of liked this one. I really did. It just seemed to fall a bit short. Visually, it's great. The ideas are creative and iconic. Like with the entry above, though, I often couldn't see the logic that linked Point A to Point B. The recipes seemed to use things a little arbitrarily. Over all, it was actually not so bad, and would have made a fine mod. shakeandbake just did it better. This was definitely my #2 pick though.
paraknight While this one had a lot of potential, and might have easily rated higher, I felt it did a couple things wrong. Mostly, the visual style was a little too modern to pull it off. I realize that the intricacy of steampunk machines can be hard to capture with Minecraft's simple style, but I think the motorcycle could have looked less polished, and maybe shown more obvious signs of steam power (like some big boilers). Requiring water in addition to coal for fuel would have been another plus. Also, while the recipe for the bike was a bit simple, the addition of needing a key seemed needlessly complex.
maciejkiller This one was just...very underwhelming. Visually, it falls flat. Most of the elements are poorly drawn, and...frankly...have uninteresting designs to begin with. Given that a large part of steampunk is aesthetic, this was a bad foot to start out on. The "Clock Block" shares a name with an existing block, and is completely non-functional besides. One wonders why it was included at all. Light bulbs aren't very steampunk, and leaving aside the fact that these were just a block with a drawn-on lamppost, the lamps really should have been gaslights to fit the theme. The "molten" items made no sense at all. Brass items are okay, but it doesn't really fit for them to be better than Diamond. Overall, I think this one was a case of being overeager, and under-prepared.
Thanks for the feedback. About the key thing, I agree it's annoying and complicates things but if I would have left it out I would have needed some other item to open the gui. Otherwise you would mount the bike every time you right click it and open the gui some other way.
From what I recall, Pchan's airship mod just has the vehicle GUI override the regular interface while you're riding it, and it also runs on coal. I think that would be an adequate solution, though I cannot speak to the actual difficulty of doing it.
Hmm... To say the least, I'm not impressed. To be more honest, I'm disappointed. Guess one can't really expect a (good) mod to be made in a week... It's not the same as texture packs after all. Therefore, no one gets my vote this time.
If Proloe's SteamCraft was part of the contest, I'd vote for it in a heartbeat.

Elegant as the Wind, Silent as a Forest, Mysterious as the Ocean,
Fierce as Fire, Immovable as a Mountain, Righteous as the Light!
Most of these do not fit the Steampunk theme except the gun and the bike. I don't think the winner should win if he/she doesn't preserve the Steampunk style/genre.
How would you get out? What about right click? Like for all other vehicles. Press your inventory button while riding to access the vehicle GUI, right click to get out.
Actual models.
Win.
He won't win.

I is sad.
