Well this discussion is already posted for the PC version, but I wanted to note that there is none for the console versions.
Whether it's colored torches, glowstone, or any other light source... there should be an option to have colored lighting. This would be an awesome feature in both creative and survival, just to change the mood of a particular part/s of our worlds.
Just think about how you would use it. Having the stained glass doesn't let the light source change color.
This for me doesn't add enough color or brightness and you still have to use the stained glass. What a bummer. I miss a certain indie game that had this feature. (Does anyone know which game I'm referring to? Hint: It was on the 360 and it was the first console block game) Simple colored light.
I will expand on this suggestion later.
Please support if you think you could use a little color with you lighting without having to use another block to alter it.

If lighting is anything like it is on PC, unfortunately it's technologically impossible unless they change it. On PC at least lighting is pretty much intertwined with the block system, blocks provide light intensity, blocks provide light opacity (how much light is reduced per block), blocks provide everything to do with lighting (excluding the sky light, still blocks are a huge part of it). Now why is coloured lighting impossible if it's locked to blocks? Simple.
The way colour is given to light is through a look-up texture, similar to the image in the Lightmap spoiler below. At each coordinate in-world the current lighting value is comprised is two sub-values, block light and sky light. Think of it this way, block light is increased by torches, lava, glowstone, whereas sky light is increased by exposure to the sun. These two values are used as the lookup coordinates, so for a block light value of 3 and a sky light value of 5, it'll be (3, 5) for the lookup coordinates which gives a super dark golden colour. However a block light value of 10 and a sky light value of 0 gives a lookup coordinate of (10, 0) which results in a lovely golden colour. Just map it out on the lightmap provided. The colour of light is hardset within a texture.
One way I see they could do it is have the lightmap in grayscale, differing shades of black, white and grey depending on the location and side of the lightmap. Then within code take that colour from the lightmap and multiply another RGB (Red Green Blue) value to essentially shade the RGB value of a light source based on intensity. But, this introduced other problems, like how would you be able to efficiently and effectively blend between sky light and block light?
I think it would be really interesting. I understand the technical issues, but I think it could happen.
Oh definitely it's possible, just that the current lighting system needs to be rewritten to allow it to be implemented. Some mods for PC allow for this, although for a performance hit and some bugs. Plus the way they did it is ingenious and just plain hackery (taking advantage of a light intensity value being a 32bit assigned integer that effectively isn't any higher than 15 in the game's code to pass the colour data along).

I just want to be able to hold a torch and it gives out light
Then that's a different topic to what this is discussing and has it's own issues, namely lighting being innately part of blocks in nature (blocks determine how much like is emitted and by how much light is reduced per block traveled). Read this blog post for an explanation. Movable and dynamic light sources has been suggestamilliontimes, and then some. And while a mod for PC edition exists (fairly certain that's the link), it's not something Mojang can just drop into the game without problems. The way a mod does it does not necessarily work as well as it does with a mod when done to the base game.

+1 for the apparently very difficult add of colored lighting. Torch + <colored glass block> = colored lamp. Dye + Glowstone = colored glowstone. Put it on the to-do list for 2016, 4J. I will gladly pay $1.99 for a disco-ball DLC to go with the colored lighting.
i love the idea for the holding a torch and it lighting up a area, but on the part of the colored light idk, its a great idea but i have no clue what i could do with it.
