Okay.
So I was playing this recently... and I was getting EXTREMELY frustrated with the new way you do upside down stairs, sideways logs, upside down slabs... etc...
And I believe that I came up with a solution to the problem.
Using the D-Pad on the controller to differentiate whether a placeable item is "upside down", "sideways", etc.
Having it be pushing Down on the D-Pad puts the placement ability in "upside down mode" so that way everything is automatically placed upside down..
And when you push Up, it returns the placement ability to normal. So everything you place is placed in the.. normal fashion it's always placed in.
And just for an additional way of placement... pushing 'left' would would make blocks go in a sort of "sideways mode", so things like stairs can be sideways (better and more defined piller work in my opinion) or have slabs be placed vertically within the left section of a block of space... and pushing 'right' would have slabs be placed vertically on the right section of a block of space.
And depending left or right.... would make stairs either sideways in one direction... or sideways the other (much the same way as upside down stairs/normal stairs just horizontal)
To perhaps... not have confusion... Perhaps have a symbol in the top left of the screen that is an arrow.
If the arrow is pointed "up", it's normal. If it's pointed "down", it's upside down, etc? Because.. there is the odd chance you might forget what "mode" you have block placement and would need a way to sort of "navigate the process"
So.. there we have it. An array of placement.. that could make the way you do minecrafting way better. You could have virtually 4x the customization you normally would not have.
I get how this could be a very complicated thing to implement but.. I also think that it wouldn't entirely be very hard either. Because.. I'm under the understanding that you can rotate blocks using the wheel on your mouse on the PC verson. To me.. this is virtually the same thing, except on a controller.

Looks like a great addition to Pocket Edition, would like to have something like this on PC though, sometimes it's hard to get the pistons how you want. Support.
The only thing I'd suggest changing is instead of setting a specific 'placement mode' for a selected block, that it would just place the block when you used the d-pad in that configuration 'as if' you pressed the Left Trigger (LT) from the correct block orientation for that placement.
Why do you need an interim control to change 'placement modes' when you could just bypass it altogether?
I'd rather they just have the stupid things placed as they are on the PC, ya know, so I don't have to jump like an idiot every time I want to place a log facing upward or dig a hole to place them in a wall.
I'm fine with the upside-down placement way; it's the sideways placement that is annoying as all heck.
(Gosh, I hope I remember everything correctly. I've been building a lot on Hexxit, too....)

Well.. I was going to say that... But... I would have to have to use the thumb I use to move... to place down a block then use the D-Pad again and again.. I suggested mode because I usually just place something like crazy... I place and just run sideways or something for example... so it would be too timely for me to go from joystick to dpad to joystick... so it'd be easier to have modes to switch between in my opinion.

I use the D-pad to move occasionally to so I'd prefer the placement mode thing too. I don't know how much I'd like this idea right now, but I'm pretty sure that it would be really helpful when it was needed.
I know it may sound ridiculous... but I was crying because I couldn't make the wood block "rotate" in the right direction.
I support.
Well.. I just got frustrated because... I managed to put on a whole row of stairs upside down without really realizing until I was done.
Then goes the process of tearing all of them down again.
I just hate the current system they put in a lot.
So... not to sound overly arrogant... But my system proposed here is far better than the ones they've tried placing in.
I had a very similiar idea but it looks like you posted it here before me so congrats. I was thinking of having this in the options to set [on]/off] for block changing. But yes this idea takes it a step farther. Support!
Either the placement is bugged on the 360, or you just don't understand how it works. If you place a slab or stair on the bottom half of a block, they will be normal. If you place them on the top half of a block, they will be upside-down. Got it?

Have you played the PC version recently? That is exactly how logs are supposed to work. If placed on the top or bottom of a block, they will be vertical. If placed on the side of a block, they will be sideways. I'm getting the impression that none of you bothered to check how these things would work beforehand.

That's a good point...
Well, having a placement mode set with the D-Pad is an option which you could toggle on and off (by tapping again in the direction it was last set), but some sort of visual would be needed to indicate when and which d-pad option was last selected, maybe a little d-pad icon in the corner with the direction last selected as being highlighted?
...
So having the placement based on target block facing would be a lot better than the player facing that it is now.
So..just align the block to the block you are attaching to so they face in the same direction? That might become problematic when you want to change orientations in the middle of a lot of blocks already oriented in one direction...but I can see the overall appeal for rapid larger builds to be able to lock it to a Same As Last orientation as opposed to POV orientation.
Maybe start with POV orientation, then toggle d-pad directional lock on/off and it changes to Same As Last orientation, toggle d-pad directional lock on/off again to switch back to POV orientation?

Sorry if I sound uncouth, but I don't think you have.
Log placement does not currently work that way. They behave the way pistons do, which is to say their placement is relative to player position and not they way you described above.

I disagree with you here. Sure, the current system is a bit funky but overall it works. I think your proposed idea would make block placement a cumbersome ordeal. Manually selecting which way I want to place a block (nevermind remembering to reset back to its original position) seems more troublesome than simply aiming the reticule more carefully.

i see ur point but I partially agree because sometimes it's easy to place the blocks in the rite direction and sometimes it's not, which is where the D-pad wood come in handy.
I think that they shud add the D-pad feature but keep the aiming carefully feature as well because some people mite like the aiming better than the D-Pad.

I noticed.. But I don't see the point. It seems... too timely.
I think unless you're a person who quick scopes head shots in battlefield 100% of the time for example.. most people won't get it... and if they do... they won't aim in the right spot of the block probably.
My way... at least it would be automatic fully until you change it.
It'd be no fuss... Kids could figure it out easier etc... It'd be better in my opinion.

Good point.... But... if they had that as well as my idea.. my idea would be irrelevant because my idea would be overridden by the fact that it would still place differently depending where you're aiming on the block.
If you have it in "upside down mode" it would be useless. Because then if you place it in the "normal spot" where it gets placed normally... it would be overridden.. Basically recreating the same frustration that I'm trying to get rid of.
So... I agree with you but... if it were to be one or the other... I'd say then jsut have it be yet another option that could be implimented into the game.

I say in some spot there'd be... perhaps an "arrow" in the top left of the screen. If it's "up", it's normal. If it's "down", it's upside down etc.
Think that'd be reasonable? I'd say the lower part of the screen but it's already a cluster-fart of junk all clumped into one section of the screen (so on a sidenote.. I'd like to see the ability to have that be more spread out).
