A very good idea me and a friend have been wondering about for a while now, is, why has obsidian armor not been introduced to the PC or Xbox version of the game? whats the point in getting it other then telleport to the nether, its kind of pointless besides that point, and you have to work so hard to get the diamond to get the obsidian then no point after you have it. Our idea is why not make obsidian armor and weaponry. this would give the game a few extra updates also, because then you could make enchanting tables run to 50 or higher to enchant obsidian armor and weps, and the only reason i say obsidian is because its after diamond, witch is the only point after diamond. Please give some feed back if you think its a good idea, lets try to get it in the game green_token
This Is NOT a good suggestion. I Say this because A. It's been suggested before and B. This version doesn't even make sense compared to the others. At least you tried to throw In some details...Points for that I guess...okay, let's start.
You said Obsidian Is useless right? No. It really isn't. Obsidian Is the only block that can't be broken by blast attack. I Find this extremely useful for projects or even bases. Doesn't Obsidian help make enchanting tables? You can't make enchanting tables without diamond.
Oh~ that also brings me to what you said about it being after diamond. Do you know how many blocks of Obsidian I could mine after I obtain a diamond pick? Ah crap...I'd have to round up the amount of diamonds In a world and then multiple that with the chance of fortune on those picks...Ugh! Nvm! All you need to know Is I could mine a lot. Did you know each world has a certain amount of diamonds? I Wonder which is more valuable, The block you can create by using a bucket of water and lava or the ore that's hidden underground. Diamond will always be best and harder to find. Not gonna lie, I called Obsidian an unlimited resource for a second, but then stopped myself because, If the average player does some how pull off every diamond In their world, once they're all gone, hey can't mine obsidian anymore. Lol I wonder how people with 8 Player servers survival with all those people hoarder after diamonds and iron.
Just a little extra for the road...Going to the nether Is amazing...It's a really important feature to the game. The nether has them fancy red blocks everyone likes to bring to the overworld, Not to mention potions either.
...I called Obsidian an unlimited resource for a second, but then stopped myself because, If the average player does some how pull off every diamond In their world, once they're all gone, hey can't mine obsidian anymore. ...
No resource is truly limitless... but I have to agree that obsidian is virtually limitless especially if a player is conservative on their diamond by using forms to gather and pour lava source blocks before cooling them into obsidian with water. As Apathy said, has a LOT of value due to it's blast resistance and it's use in making enchanting tables.
If I were to give obsidian stats for armor and weapons, I would give them the same damage value relative to stone tools/weapons or about chain armor for protection, but extremely high durability (lasts very long, but not very efficient).

It has its uses. But I think there should be more to it. Maybe if it had tools.... It could be like... it's stronger than iron, but weaker than diamond.
even with out the armor being added, i still do believe the obsidian tools should be added tho. its a great idea because even after you use all the diamonds in the world, you would have so much obsidian built up. and it could be made possible that obsidian could break obsidian same as diamonds do. in witch case, the game could be played for months on end. i just figured why stop at diamonds you know? when there could be a lot more added to the game. and thank you all for your opinions :D! i agree with a lot, but there are ways and things that could be changed to make it, just figured i would throw it out as an idea
If anything obsidian should be implemented into xbox minecraft then I think obsidian arrows would be a good thing to have. Its about as easy to obtain as flint is, it just takes a while longer to mine. I think it should produce the same amount of arrows as flint would (witch is 4 if you were wondering) and have the same crafting recipe. The difference between the two should that an obsidian arrow should not fly as far as a regular arrow would but in return it would do more damage. This way when somebody with a sword comes after you you have a better chance to fend him off if he has good armor on. It should only do about a half a heart of extra damage when its pulled fully back tho. Otherwise I see no other point in using obsidian for other things because it would make the game too easy if you could run around with over powered armor and if you had tools that were obsidian it would almost make iron tools useless because you have something that isn't as good as diamond but a better durability. What do you guys thing?

That's why I suggested making it better durability than iron, but less efficient than iron (roughly equivalent to stone).
However, considering your arrow suggestion... how would the game determine which set of arrows you were using if you had both stacks in your inventory?
However, considering your arrow suggestion... how would the game determine which set of arrows you were using if you had both stacks in your inventory?
Simple, same way the game used to determine what block would used to make wooden planks before the update where you could make different color planks. Here is an example
* / / / / / / / / Top inventory row
/ / / / / / / / / Middle inventory row
/ / / / / / + / / Last inventory row
/ / / / / / / / / Hot bar or Quick bar
In the instance above a flint arrow would be used over an obsidian arrow because the inventory is read from left to right. Now, I am not 100% sure about this but I think that if an arrow in you hot bar it will be used before your inventory is checked for arrows. So I think the inventory is read like this

Hmm... I'm agreeing there.. somewhat... I'd like to say it should be better than stone... But like you said.. Dont' want to make it OP and have it pretty much be useless to look up iron in the world. I think I'll agree with you.
I'm not sure if i'm agreeing with this. Its hard enough to find diamonds to make a diamond pickaxe to mine obsidian - and I have to admit - I've only found 8 diamons the most. Yes, i'm still a noob.
Half support.

Well if you think about it adding obsidian tools( or anything really ) would force a total rework of at least diamond items if not everything. It's just not practicle the way you portray it. Now if you can only mine obsidian with diamond pick maybe obsidian armor could only be damaged by diamond swords, this makes sense.
Perhaps obsidian and lava bucket could be used to craft an infinite stove that's blast proof or to craft with a chest, crafting table, ex. To make them indestructible. Just some thoughts

As long as you keep it balanced in the game, nothing else needs to be re-worked.

....Broken.... Obsidian should not be better than diamond, especially not across the board, it is way too common to come by.
Also, having the weapons/ armor be impervious to any specific type, or only be impacted by a specific type of material, is not a mechanic that is currently in the game programming.
I would make Obsidian gear a bit more powerful than Iron in general honestly... (Between Iron and Diamond).
Also, the main reason why I support Obsidian gear is that Iron, Gold, and Diamond are limited... We will run out eventually of said stuff. Obsidian? Obsidian is an infinity resource (like stone is). It's just, stone is really weak unless enchanted. That and there are NO stone armor so ye'h...
Plus Obsidian gear would look pretty cool due to the color.
Anyways. I support Obsidian gear but not versions of it where it is weak like stone (which some had suggested). I honestly see Obsidian a bit stronger than Iron myself but not by much.
I would say full Obsidian would give only about a half armor point more than full iron. Obsidian sword will do slightly more damage than iron and so on. However, Obsidian pickaxe will be able to mine Obsidian (but a bit slower than diamond obviously). And Obsidian's life should be half of Diamond's life (which is still more than Iron, yes?).Also should note Obsidian don't have much use other than Portals and Enchantment tables. Iron has A LOT of uses and if you are like me and do make a railroad in your mine, you will go through iron and gold very quickly just cause of rails...

Half of a full set of diamond armor is 5 defense, and a full set of iron is 7 and a half defense, so Obsidian should be about 8 defense, since diamond is 10.

That's the idea. Full Obsidian should be 8 armor point. I knew iron was 7.5 and I kinda like rounded numbers.
Also, I think you misread my post with the "Obsidian's life" and "Diamond's life". I'm talking about how long the object will last before it breaks. Diamond is like 4,000, right? So Obsidian should be around 2,000. I think Iron is like 800 or something. I don't know for sure.

Sorry I didn't know you meant the durabilty.
According to the Minecraft Wiki, the amount of damage that can be done to each piece of armor before it breaks is shown below:
Due to how 'hard' obsidian is (requiring a diamond pick to mine), I agree with the durability suggested above, however, due to the commonality of obsidian AND do to the fact that other than it's hardness, it is still effectively flint like or rock like, I do not support it being more 'effective' than iron.

Looking at: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Armor
That would be something like:
Full Set Obsidian protection = 6.0
Protection / Durability (Diamond Durability) {+20% Durability of Diamond}
Helm = 1.0 / 437 (364)
Chest = 2.5 / 635 (529)
Legs = 2.0 / 595 (496)
Boots = 1.5 / 516 (430)
Damage:
Sword = 6
Ax = 5
Pick = 4
Shovel = 3
Hoe = n/a
Uses: 1172 (Diamond:1562) {75% of Diamond}
Or breaking portals in the Nether and repairing them etc to spawn new portals lol.
It has its uses. But I think there should be more to it. Maybe if it had tools.... It could be like... it's stronger than iron, but weaker than diamond.
I don't know just throwing it out there.

Empty inventory slot - /
