I am having trouble getting my piston to work, I have given them direct power through a red stone torch or switch but the pistons just won't activate... any ideas?
Yeah... there's a known piston bug since the most recent update that has been reported which occasionally causes all pistons to lock up and become unresponsive on the entire map.

They occasionally work - for a while - when indirectly powered. If you use redstone dust from a power source, they seem to do ok, but then on saving / reloading after a while they appear to stop working again despite this.
What I want to know is, is the change in piston tech deliberate? Can they be no longer directly powered, or is it indeed a much larger issue?
Ive been having the same issue. Ive tried directly liking it to dust, ive tried repeaters, comparitors, torches, levers, trip wire and ive even set it directly on a redstone block, but still the pistons didnt work. Not saying im a genius or something, but trial and error point to a bug.
I agree, I'm pretty sure it's a bug, tried all power sources, even a daylight timer but nothing! It kinda sucked to because my houses door is a 3x3 spiral, there goes that build for a while, hope they send out a patch.
The bug update that is supposed to fix the piston issue (among others) is currently in Cert Testing with Microsoft (since Jan 16), give it a few days and it should start working when the next bug patch update is released.
While "piston lock" has been fixed, pistons are still not working properly. I mentioned this in the official Bug thread, but will re-post here.
A piston should be able to draw power if the block above it is receiving power (even if that block is an air-block). However in TU20 this is only the case if the block above a piston is receiving Strong (primary) power, such as feeding the top block with a repeater.
If the top block is being powered by Weak (secondary) power, this should still power the bottom piston, but instead what is happening is the bottom piston won't activate until it receives an additional update. Hence, it becomes a BUD switch.
This problem has started with TU14, when 4J changed the piston timing (for whatever reason - I have my suspicions) but has gotten worse with the last two updates. As of now I have not found a viable work-around except to make sure your pistons are Strongly powered. This still renders 3x3, and even certain 2x2, piston doors inoperable. 2x2 floor traps work fine, however, since all the pistons can receive Strong power.

Hard to believe it wouldn't crop up in testing!

Just need to figure out what to do now my melon /pumpkin farm has stopped auto cropping
