No offense intended, but that's the lamest excuse I've ever heard. If a person can afford an Xbox 360 Console, Minecraft XB360 Edition, and Xbox Live Gold, then that same person can afford a USB keyboard, which would probably be about $20.
They don't want people to have to pay extra money on something when it's unnessesary. Why should someone have to pay for a chatpad, or a usb keyboard just so they can write in a book on minecraft more efficiently? It's not a lame excuse, sure most people have an xbox, tv, gold. Does not mean they want to buy extra just for the convienince.
It would be nice to have the book and quill item on the 360 version, I'd sure make good use out of it no matter how tedious it would be to type words into it.

It is a lame excuse, especially if a person already has a USB keyboard to begin with. And considering most people have an xbox, tv and xbox live gold, then guess what? They probably have a computer as well.
And something else you should think about. Just suppose (hypothetically), for the moment, that 4J decided to go ahead and add the Book & Quill, to the xbox 360 version of Minecraft. If people find it to be a pain to use, they don't have to craft it. It's that simple.
And something else you should consider. Hopefully, at some point in the future, there will be dedicated servers, which could lead to the possibility of legitimately downloadable Adventure maps. Book & Quill would have to be implemented regardless.
There's a limit on the number of signs you can make, and also, there's a serious limit of how much you can put on a sign. A Book & Quill is far more convenient than a sign.

Clearly, you're not understanding the underlying statement. They don't want you to have to buy extra things just to use a feature in the game. What if someone does not have a keyboard? Why should they have to go buy a keyboard just so they can type quicker in the book? Don't craft it? What if they like the books, what if they're a kid and can't get mom or dad to buy them a keyboard or a chatpad. It's like this for convenience of the customer and nothing else. Not having a book you can write in is not a really big deal if you ask me.
When I saw this,it just made me sad because they are not coming.I was thinking of making a library with books like Rise of the Herobrine or maybe Legend of Notch.
I for one agree with ubergine, as it makes no sense why not having a keyboard or chat pad would be the real reason... Just to say If the parents would not buy it if they didn't have one, when the controller still can do the same thing. *shakes head*
Regardless of those issues I don't think that is what the reasoning is, as ubergine pointed out and I myself have been thinking all along; it would be the censor filter by microsoft that would be the reason. Signs are one sorce of lag, but those you read out right.
In a way I think they could do it even with that in mind. All they got to really do is have it only que that mircosoft thing when you open the book to read it. And that would only be in multiplayer anyhow. The text would be stored just like signs but taking up a bit of space. Maybe they don't know how much space should be enough for a book, as they would need a limit on it as well how many books one could make. That would make sense in the very least.
To me though over all it would be nice to have the books/quill item, but it does not matter whether it comes in or not overall... If it is there you can rest assured I would be one to use the "Tedious" method since we don't have a keyboard, and I don't feel like borrowing my uncle's chat pad.... That and I am probably more patient than your average person.... If it doesn't ever come to xbox, no biggy, I still have a full game to work with and enjoy.:D

Okay, so, you don't have a keyboard or whatever, so writing a book is a pain. I get that. Seems easy enough to just not make use of them. Most folks don't use every single thing in Minecraft. What's nice is to have the option to. So the folks that have keyboards...or just have a looooooooot of patience and a lot of dedication...can write cool little journals and things.
I mean, this is a game where people spend hours and hours and hours obsessively building awesome stuff. It's not too hard to think that there is a subset of players that wouldn't mind spending hours and hours obsessively writing stuff in the awesome stuff they built.
I'm not going to cry if they don't put it in, but the argument, "Some folks won't want to use it, therefore it shouldn't be in" seems...odd to me.
The "people might not have a USB keyboard" excuse is bogus. Anyone who cares enough about Minecraft to want to write books cares enough to plug in a freaking keyboard.
Yes, there are undoubtedly some children somewhere whose parents bought them an Xbox 360, a copy of Minecraft, and maybe even Xbox Live, but refuse to pay $5 for a USB keyboard. There are also undoubtedly children somewhere whose parents bought them Custer's Revenge (or helped them install the "Hot Coffee" mod for GTA). It makes no more sense to base development decisions on the former than on the latter. Not all of the players of Minecraft are children. (I would venture to guess that few are) And even of the ones who are, most of them have five bucks in disposable income available.
The one I've got on my Xbox came from Microcenter a couple of years ago: $5.
I got one for my MIL at Wal-Mart the other day: $3.
I see them at yard sales all the time, usually tossed in boxes of random stuff: $1 or less.
You can get a USB keyboard for less than the price of a big bag of Doritos. Whatever the reason may be, the price and availability of USB keyboards is not it.

I'm pretty sure the filter would be better off kicking in every time you go to edit and save the book, since that would mean that it would not have to be refiltered every time it was opened just to read it... which should save a little on the load on the filter program. It's probable though that it may not be able to be worked that way... depends on how Microsoft's filter actually functions. Like you, I tend to think that the statement at Minecon about it never coming just because it's too cumbersome to type was just essentially an excuse - it holds some truth, but I also don't believe it's the entire reason. I think that even with a chatpad, the process would slow the game considerably and that's the real crux of the problem. Also, in splitscreen mode, it IS REALLY IRRITATING whenever a text screen is called up for someone to type even just a quick sign since it also covers over the parts of the screen that the other player(s) in. (If they made it such that the text screen only covered a 1/2 or 1/4 of the screen that the player who wants to type is in, then that player would never be able to read what they are typing. Also, to try to play on while another player on the same system is typing text would probably unbelievably laggy and even freeze up the Xbox entirely. (The PC doesn't have splitscreen - so this is not an issue there.)
Personnaly, have no desire to type or even read tomes of words in a video game anyway, so it's one feature I'm quite happy to do without. Minecraft already almost contains too much text for me as it is - particularly when trying to step someone new through the tutorial and while they are still encountering new items and getting achievements.
I do undertand that some people like to write voluminous back stories and such, but figure that, until we get map sharing, this is pretty limited anyway. If we do get map sharing, then perhaps the original creator of the map could be given the option of appending an "instruction book/ back story" to the file created on a word processor that could be opened and read by people prior to joining the world. If the author of the instruction book wanted to change it, they would have to delete the old one and append a new one... that way the file would have to be cleared by the MS filters only when the author first appends it or each time they append an amended version of it to the gamesave file.
good thing they don't have beach balls in the game...><
Yeah probably better that they do once or every time it is edit/save, that would make sense. I can understand those that don't like reading more than they have to in certain games... Sometimes it does get annoying. At least these books would be on que, as in not like a sign where you read it just by looking at it, you would have to open it first...lol
And yes that filter of theirs does baffle me sometimes at the words it chooses to censor, since quite a few of them are senseless and common words that usually refer to an object, place, or idea in mind. I can understand to some degree if was swearing or something like that, but even that has a work around to some degree.
I will always be 50-50 on this. Will be glad if they add it, but doesn't really matter if they don't. At least for me. I just like having plenty of options of things to do in game. The more variety, the more there is to do.:D

In splitscreen, the real annoyance is that the typing interface opens up into the entire screen, stopping play on that screen for everyone entirely until the person typing is done. If a text box has to open up on the whole screen every time someone wants to write or read in a book, it would be beyond annoying for anyone trying to play in splitscreen with that player. I can hear the conversations now... (couple playing in splitscreen together) "Honey, I know your Steve is in the middle of a battle with a creeper, but why don't you go to our IRL kitchen and get us both a beer while I read the back story to this world we just joined?"
