So, I've been playing this with my kids. So far we have 3 different worlds going. One feels like it is all forest, the other is ocean, and my fave is acacia/desert/prairie. In the desert one I have 1/2 a double chest of cobble. So far in all three worlds I have found one pocket of diamonds. I've been playing minecraft for many years on all the versions. I've strip mined and gone through a lot of caves. What the heck???
I've made (and explored) dozens of worlds and there's been a wide selection of biomes in each one. Yank up the view distance, get on top of a mountain and you can see them.
As for the diamonds, they are rare, close to bedrock, and all I can tell you is.... keep digging. Diamond tools are nice cause they last longer, but iron will do.
To solve your diamond problem, save your inventory to a chest, pop into creative, place all the diamond ore you want on the ground outside your home, pop back into survival, grab your stuff, and then go "mine" all the diamonds you need.
yeah, I figured the map was a nope. I'm sure there is a fine selection of biomes, but I'm playing with a 7 year old. Let me tell you, she puts patience to the test. "Zoe, don't jump in that hole. There is lava." Next thing I read is that she burnt to death. Oh well. How close to bedrock did you find diamond? I've been mining at lvl 14. Zoe wants to go to the nether LOL.
Of course Zoe wants to go there. It's only filled with "fire, rivers of lava, and dangerous & powerful mobs". From what you said, sounds like she won't last long.
We found an abandoned mineshaft and there were quite a few in there :). I've been to the nether, it's my younger two who haven't. I usually played modded pc mc with my 18 year old. It's been nice playing "vanilla" again. Is there a way to know what your seed is? I sprinted for 2 days in one direction and found nothing but acacia and desert. In another direction we crossed a huge ocean and was able to find a spruce tree! Thanks for your help.
I had a seed that I mined the crap out of right near my base, couldn't find jack. Moved to a new area and mined, found a few pockets of diamonds right off. Try starting a new mine in a different area. I've heard that Mesa biomes have more diamonds, but haven't tested that myself.
Best way is to dig straight down (bring ladders), 2x1, until you hit bedrock (level 1) and then count up 5 levels, so your "floor" is level 5. Dig you out a room, and start doing hallways 2x1, with 2 blocks in between. Do that till you're exhausted, then go back to your shaft, and go up two levels, so that the "floor" of your next level is on top of the "ceiling" for the lower level. Do the same thing - big room, hallways. You can do a third level to cover 16 and below for diamonds. Most efficient method to cover the most ground. If you can find a cave, that can help you get to a lower level without much digging, but a 2x1 shaft doesn't take much to dig out, and then you don't have to wander through a cave to get to your mine.

Oh is it possible to make a map on here??
thanks

Sorry, you can't make a map....yet.

Diamonds are found at level 16 or below, so you should be ok. Like I said, they're there, just keep on digging.
You can read about the Nether here:

I find diamond pretty common though. Of 10 worlds i mined, only one took longer !!
In one seed, i mined 4 stacks and 43 diamonds from only 2 caves, but with fortune 3 pick-axe.
Generally i look for cave where there's lava at the bottom. From there, i strip mine a lil bit. It's my most effective way to find them.
Once, i had found 4 pockets of diamond very close of each other.
Cave systems are Op dude !!!
