Considering the number of features which will be implemented in the next update I would say that your Survival mod gameplay experience will be significantly enhanced.
There are new blocks; new mobs; new biomes; Ocean monuments
Yeah, this going to be a great improvement for Survival
Strangely this has been a bit of an issue. It is entirely possible that the tweeted pics were all creative mode. Making fake biomes isn't very hard at all. I have been concerned about this as well. So far, nothing suggests that the features being added will be survival friendly, nor that the features wouldn't be. Though it would not surprise me considering the last time new blocks were added it was only for creative mode. Bottom line is wait and see. 4J is already working on the new tutorial world and after that it goes off to Microsoft for certification. So we should know in 2 or 3 weeks.
If they pull a pc move and make us wait until next year a boat load of people will be pretty sore. They know that. So either they take gamers seriously or they don''t. This is where I begin to wish title updates costed money. More power of pursuasion to keep fresh content flowing in.

Creating the defining features of biomes, like the native trees or desert pyramids, is easy. Creating the true characteristics of each biome - like how it doesn't rain in the desert, or how very few mobs spawn Mesa, or how it only snows in snow-related biomes - is impossible on Console.
Have we seen footage to determine whether it was raining or snowing or that there were no mobs in a mesa?
No, but it's unreasonable to assume Mojang would show off what I call "artificial biomes," areas made to look like a certain biome. For example, they showed Ice Spike Biome: if that was an "artificial biome," no one would care, because ice and snow are already in the game and anyone could build fake ice spikes.
Don't worry, this is a major update, it will almost definitely apply to Survival just like the update with Horses applied to Survival. The one adding Acacia Wood, etc was just a small update inbetween major content updates. Though I do wish they would've at least added the leaves and saplings..

Is there any news about whether the updates for TU31 will apply to survival mode? I was very disappointed they didn't apply the last time

Well you can't create a Biome in Creative Mode, those are placed when the map is generated.
