If I delete the .minecraft it downloads the update fine but then it crashes the same way. I can tell it's a graphics card problem (because ATI.ACE is the Catalyst Manager), but here's the thing, it worked before I had to completely wipe my system. Now if I have to replace the graphics card, that's no big deal. I have a way better computer that can run Minecraft except it's being used a lot and I can't get on it very often. I just want to know why this is happening. I searched on Google and nothing helped so I was hoping I could get some help here. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
And to note I also tried installing JRE6 and the same thing happened.
The problem is with the AMD drivers.... and sadly there is no easy way to fix this. You can try toying around with the global settings, or rolling back to a slightly older version of catalyst. Someone tested and found out a certain version of catalyst that had worked reliably with the game, but I can't find that post.
...or rolling back to a slightly older version of catalyst.
I'll do that, I just installed Catalyst 6.11 at the get go because it was the latest Catalyst Version I could download according to ATI. If I get one working I'll post what version I downloaded. Also my graphics card is a Radeon 9200 on an AGP8X slot.
yeah, thats the legacy pack. (Catalyst is up to 12.6 on the newer cards)
One last ditch effort you can try is uninstalling the drivers, then using Driver Sweeper to clean it out, then reinstall. Its a long shot, but you don't many options on a system that old.
I did what you said and it still didn't work. Oh well. :/ Should I just install a new Graphics Card? I have a spare NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200 that I can install in the computer. (I have an ATI Radeon 9250 but it uses the same version of Catalyst. :/) I didn't think I'd get it to work, I just wanted to know what was wrong with my current card.
The FX5200 is trash.... Think 440MX, except more VRAM and was an even bigger mistake to own. The 9250 is just a slower clocked 9200.
But with the system only having an AGP slot, any card you buy would be a waste of money unless you get an 9800 second hand.... assuming your power supply can handle it. All in all, your better off using this as an excuse to get a new computer. With a $600 budget you can get something at least 3 times as powerful as your current system and still not even scratch the performance surface.
I already own a computer with an ASUS ENGTS 450 in it, it has 1GB of VRAM. The computer has 4 GB of RAM and the CPU is a Phenom II X4 420 (the last number maybe not be entirely correct, but I don't exactly remember), and the HDD is 1TB. So I have a gaming computer. The one I'm currently using has one AGP8X Slot and 3 PCI ports, the AGP port has my current GFX Card in it, one PCI has a Wi-Fi Network Card, another has the Sony BTF-PA401Z PCVA-IMB5A card (because it's a Sony Vaio desktop but I had to re-install the whole OS), and the last PCI Port has a sound card I had to put in because the onboard sound wasn't working at the time but I can remove it now. And these Graphics cards were given to me for these computers so I didn't buy them. Long story short, a lot of the people in my house use that computer and I can only get on it rarely so I was hoping to fix this one up to play some games. I know it won't be the best, but I'm the only one that uses this computer.
The FX5200 will work though right? The most gaming I plan on doing on the computer is Minecraft.
Sorry for the double post, but I'd just like to say that I took out the Radeon 9000 and put in the Radeon 9250 and Minecraft works now. I don't know why the 9000 didn't work (does Minecraft not like AGP8X Cards?), but I got Minecraft working now.
If you appreciate my help the please check out the server in my sig. Thanks and best of luck to you!
I'll do that, I just installed Catalyst 6.11 at the get go because it was the latest Catalyst Version I could download according to ATI. If I get one working I'll post what version I downloaded. Also my graphics card is a Radeon 9200 on an AGP8X slot.
No, I'm not. At least I don't think I am. I'm using this:

One last ditch effort you can try is uninstalling the drivers, then using Driver Sweeper to clean it out, then reinstall. Its a long shot, but you don't many options on a system that old.
