What is the latest version of 64-bit Java that Minecraft will recognize? I installed the latest 64-bit Java version about a week ago, but Minecraft didn't like it and installed its own 32-bit version. So now I get the "A 64-bit installation of Java is recommended for 'Far' Render Distance" bullcrap, even though I HAVE 64-bit Java installed.
Are you sure that your computer is x64? I was able to install x64 JDK 7.0 on my x86 computer and it just doesn't do anything. And Java 7.0 is the newest version that can run Minecraft.

The absolute best decision is to have both installed. The reason is that not all programs and browsers are 64-bit so they'll need 32-bit Java to run. It is completely possible to have both installed.
Now, when both are finally installed run MineCraft through a .bat file (you can google or search the forums for instructions). Basically it allows you to customize how minecraft is run. You can tell it which Java file to use, how much RAM to give to MineCraft, and which MineCraft.exe to use.
If you appreciate my help then please check out the server in my sig! Thanks!
