Specs
HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop
Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1, 64-bit
Intel Core i7-2820QM @ 2.30GHz
8GB RAM
750GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
AMD Radeon HD 7690M XT
Minecraft, version 1.2.5
Problem
Minecraft consistently crashes less than 5 minutes into a single player game.
Process
1. Installed 32-bit Java 7 Update 5 using regular Internet Explorer after removing any previous versions. Ran Minecraft on fancy graphics, normal rendering distance, balanced FPS, and advanced openGL off. Game froze. Control alt delete, stop Minecraft, Java fails.
2. Installed 64-bit Java 7 Update 5 using 64-bit Internet Explorer. Ran Mincraft on same settings as above. Game froze and display driver failed then recovered, but game window turns white and remains frozen. Control alt delete, stop Minecraft, Java fails.
3. Uninstalled both versions of Java 7 Update 5. Installed 64-bit Java 6 Update 33 using 64-bit Internet Explorer. Ran Minecraft on same settings. Same result as above except game window turned clear.
*I have also tried the fix where you put a shortcut on your desktop and set its target to make sure that it's starting with the right version of Java. This has the same result as in step 2.
*When I was trying that fix, I noticed in the Java console that it was saying that it didn't recognize Windows 7. Set compatibility mode for Windows Vista, then Windows XP Service Pack 3. Same results as in step 2.
*I've almost always started with a fresh world on each retry.
*I have the latest display driver as provided by HP; AMD doesn't provide direct updates to this card.
I would very much appreciate any help that anyone can provide with this issue. I believe that it's a problem with Java, as sometimes while playing Counter-Strike: Source and switching between desktop and game, the display driver has failed then recovered successfully.

It let me play for maybe 5 minutes, froze briefly, display driver stopped responding then recovered, game window turned white and unresponsive, control alt delete, ended Minecraft, Java crashed and the game window closed.
I tried again with my display set to Windows 7 Basic settings, because it was flashing to Basic as the driver stopped responding, and the same thing happened, except that the screen turned black instead of white.
I also tried with it set to compatibility mode to Vista and then XP and it still does the exact same thing; even saying it doesn't recognize the Windows 7 operating system.
Hi, I am unable to play minecraft as well: it isn't a video problem (or graphics), and I am running windows 7. Here is the error report, using the program listed above:
If the link does not work, here is the original data that i saved in a notepad:

I have encountered a problem with this solution. I have a Samsung 6000 series flatscreen hooked up to the laptop as a secondary display, and when I use this fix, the bottom half of the TV screen stops working when the desktop is extended, but not when it's duplicated. You can still mouse over the blackness, but windows don't appear visable over it. It's worth noting that the video card number changes in the device manager when using this driver. It's like 6000 something instead of 7690.
I'm having pretty much the same problem as the OP. I'll get into the game, and Minecraft will crash to desktop within seconds of the world loading. Here's my error report:

Interesting note: I also have an AMD Radeon graphics card. I think that AMD is somehow not playing nice with the Minecraft client. I'm updating my drivers now - I'll let you know if it changes anything.Oh, also, this is the more detailed error report referred to in the error report above:

You are trying to start Java with an Xms parameter that is too big, it is either illegally big (like say over 1.5G with 32bit Java), or it is more memory than your system has.
...aaand that fixed it. Thank you, gerbil! Do you know why Advanced OpenGL doesn't work for me? I'm kind of curious. It worked fine until I updated the client to the most recent version. I haven't changed my video settings in years.
No idea. It's usually off by default, so you've had it on for a while? Are you sure you haven't changed your video driver recently?
Or alternatively, switched from a 32bit java to 64bit or vice versa?
Bugs in video drivers (or any software really) can be dependent upon the combination of things / features that are being used. So it is possible that nothing changed except some subtle sequence of video driver calls between MC versions. Mojang did say that they fixed some lighting issues in the latest snaps didn't they?
Maybe. Like I said, it's been on for years. I did update my video drivers about a month ago, but there was no problem until I updated the Minecraft client to the most recent version. No change to my Java version. Very strange.
In any case, it all seems copacetic now. So, again, thanks!
I am also having a problem with the game client. I have my vid card updated and everything but everytime i try to log in through the client the client will just go from a black screen to just closing and then giving me an error txt. i also have a Radeon vid card so yeah. dont know what is going onhere is my error report from the .bat file

I just wanted to update that for anyone who is currently experiencing MY problem, it is fixable with the latest AMD Catalyst 12.11 beta (12.10 is the current official version that my laptop is not accepting).
Also, do you have a GPU monitor installed? Higher end cards on a laptop is like putting a bunch of wood planks in a room full of lava....
It doesn't pop up with a generated crash log, if that's what you were asking.
I have the Catalyst Control Manager software installed for the video card.

If the link does not work, here is the original data that i saved in a notepad:

Interesting note: I also have an AMD Radeon graphics card. I think that AMD is somehow not playing nice with the Minecraft client. I'm updating my drivers now - I'll let you know if it changes anything.Oh, also, this is the more detailed error report referred to in the error report above:
