So just to let everyone know off the bat I don't play minecraft... and I'm a semi-n00b linux admin. My sister and her friends love the game so I thought for her birthday I would setup a Minecraft server on my Ubuntu media server.
Up until a couple of days ago the server was working. I could start the server using the upstart script listed in the server tutorial and it would run for a few days until it crashed, at which point I would just run the script again and everything would be fine.
As of yesterday when ever I try to run the server either from the script or in the background, minecraft crashes. If I try and boot the server with the upstart script everything seems to run properly but If i run
ps aux | grep minecraft
nothing comes back. If I check the syslogs in /var/log/syslog I find this line
<Computername> init: minecraft_server main process (16538) terminated with status 1
the server never seems to full load. If my sister tries to connect to the server she recieves a "Cant reach server error message". If I run a nmap scan from my laptop on the server port 25565 comes back as closed
At this point I'm stumped, this is a headless server that I only connect to via ssh so leaving a ssh window open 24/7 isn't a realistic. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this issue please let me know.
Use screen.
Type screen in the console. This should take you to a blank terminal.
Now use java -Xmx2G -Xms2G -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
Server should launch normally.
Use CTRL + A + D to detach the screen. You can now safely close your SSH session.

Hope this helped
