Hey guys, i recently bought a Sapphire 6870 to upgrade from a 9400gt, in order to play BF3, Crysis, etc, it runs every game just fine, like 55 - 60fps with Vsync on and settings maxed, but when it comes to minecraft, its performance is lower than it was with my old 9400gt O_o, just so you know and before i start, my system specs are:
Intel Core i3 550 @3.20Ghz
Kingston 2x4GB (8GB total) RAM @1333Mhz
Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 1GB (Not Overvlocked)
Seagate 500GB HDD
Cooler Master GX 750 PSU
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
ATI Catalyst Control Center 12.4 (Latest Version)
64bit Java 7 update 4
so i'd like to know what i can do to make minecraft run better than my old 9400gt. right now, Vanilla minecraft runs at like 50-1xx fps, being 60 the average with Advanced OpenGL off, but i feel some "choppiness" while playing and it annoys me a little (didn't have this problem with 9400gt, and i had lke 70+ fps average, never below 60 with PureBDcraft 128x and OpenGL on), and it goes slower with OpenGL turned on, like 50fps or less.
Shouldn't it be a lot faster with Advanced OpenGL on? i know that what it does is not render what you can't see bassically, in order to improve fps. is this a problem with my OpenGL drivers? or is it with ATI cards?
I've tried Optifine, and it does improve my fps, but well... i don't really like using extra software to improve my fps when i have a perfectly good computer powerful enough to run MC at 70+ fps with a 9400gt and not being able to do the same or better with a 10x better card annoyes the hell out of me lol, but it's just me.
anyone having the same issue with opengl on? how did you solve it? How many fps do you guys get with the same card with OpenGL on and off? any help is appreciated.
Advanced Open GL uses an Open GL feature called an Occlusion Query (to determine what is hidden and doesn't need to be rendered).
Not all GPU & driver combinations support this in hardware, and when it is instead supported in software the performance will be reduced by enabling this. This fact, plus the fact that some drivers just have bugs in this feature and crash are why the option is optional.
