I have a problem with hosting minecraft servers. I did everything i was told to create a minecraft server, but when my friend tries to join, it says "connection: timed out" for him.
Here is what i did:
-Downloaded the Minecraft_Server.exe from www.minecraft.net
-Run the minecraft_server.exe
-opened the server properties and wrote down my ip address which i got from typing the ipconfig in the cmd into the server properties
-I portforwarded my minecraft server, my router is 2Wire 5012NV-002
-i opened up minecraft_server.exe and gave my friend my public ip address from ipchicken.com
opened the server properties and wrote down my ip address which i got from typing the ipconfig in the cmd into the server properties
-I portforwarded my minecraft server, my router is 2Wire 5012NV-002
If you portforwarded to the wrong IP address you could have this problem. The ip address has to belong to your server and be reachable by the router.
Another thing to check is that there is no firewall on either your server pc or your router which is blocking the connections.
1. if on windows go to cmd and type ipconfig
2.copy your ip4
3.go to your router and go to the portforwarding.
4.You portforward your server for tcp and udp
5.after that is done leave your server ip in properties blank.
6.run it and give your friend the ip it should work

yeah i double checked it. I did everything correctly and i also off my firewall.
I struggled with port forwarding my 2wire modem also.
In the end, my mistake was that I had not selected which PC to port forward the Minecraft connection to.
By default, the first connection in my list was selected, which was not the hosting PC.
Once I figured that out, it was all good.
In summary, when you open your router connection in the browser, do the following:
- click the Settings tab
- click the Firewall sub-tab
- click Application Support
- under 1) Select a computer, click the hosting PC name ("Choose Computer_Name")
^ ^ ^ ^ ^ this was the step I had overlooked
- under 2) Edit firewall settings for this computer, click the button for Allow individual applications
- then click Add a new user-defined application
- enter Application profile name, for example "Minecraft"
- select TCP button
- type in port range From: 25565 To: 25565
- you can skip the next 2 entries, as leaving them blank will assign them the default
- under Application type, select PPTP virtual private network server
- click Add to list
- go back to the top and select the UDP button
- type in port range From: 25565 To: 25565
- you can skip the next 2 entries, as leaving them blank will assign them the default
- under Application type, select PPTP virtual private network server
- click Add to list
- click Back
- find your new entry in the Application list and select it
- click Add, to move it to the Hosted applications list
- click Save at the bottom right corner
- all done
Hope that works for you, it took me a lot of headaches to figure out where I had messed it up.
Play well.

and is your firewall or antivirus on those are key factors that block ports
Don't worry you will get it
hopefully sooner then me(5 hours of trial and error)
but after i found the problem i did on a diffrent computer and the stuff i wrote down worked fine
i will post tutorial for my router most are the same just in diffrent places
Do you mean my minecraft server properties?
Oh, i will go check if my port is opened at the website you given me.
Btw, if you are doing a tutorial, could you send me a link to your tutorial? yeah i double checked it. I did everything correctly and i also off my firewall.
Where is your friend connecting from, in the same house as you or his own over the internet.
If its over the internet your getting the wrong ip. type "what is my ip" into google to get the correct ip
Give him that one.
On the computer your hosting the server on goto cmd, type ipconfig and get the ip4 ip address.
Once you have that port forward that ip address.
It should work now.
It is only possible for pirited copies to connect if you select Online Mode to false but i hope your only using them to test the game.
