I wanted to create a Minecraft server so my friends can play on it, but then I deleted it because my friend said you had to pay. I did some research and it ranged from 0.50 cents to $2. Some months after, a Minecraft player from my school said he set up a server and he didn't have to pay. He also mentioned that you only have to pay for the cool plugins like Bukkit. So now that I am confused, do you have to pay or not for a Minecraft server
There is a Fast Free Server Hosting Program its called Hamachi, its great for minecraft, i tryed Bukkit it wasnt as good as i expected.
Thank you,

Hosting a server is free, if you host from your own computer. You do not need hamachi or anything else. You will need to understanding port forwarding, firewalls, and basic server admin type stuff like whitelists and operators.

Hamachi doesn't make your server run faster, its also a pain in the ass to use sometimes.
and bukkit is the exact same as a regular minecraft server except you have a wider choice for mods.
Off topic: What's the point of using hamachi for minecraft servers? I don't get it.
It as an easy way for people who don't know how to portforward to run a server. It creates a Virtual Network that is simple to use. Hamachi tends to be fairly fast. The downside is you always have to have Hamachi running when you run your server, and everyone who wants to play on your server has to have hamachi themselves and be apart of your network. Instructions I made a few minutes ago are here: Step 1:
Download LogMeinHamachi at https://secure.logme...i/download.aspx . Check the Terms of Conditions box and click download now under the unmanaged half (left Download button). Follow the instructions to download, they aren't different from anything else, and then open up Hamachi. I have seen problems, and it is a problem for me as well, where you will try to run Hamachi, but if fails to connect to the engine. Never fear! It is an easy problem to fix. If you go to the start menu, the bottom left button, and type in Services, a few services will come up. It is usually the top one. Click on Services and a page will come up with a list of a lot of services. Make sure you are on local services (indicated by the left tab saying Services(Local). Scroll down through the list of your services until you find LogMeInHamachi in the L section. Right click it and click start. It will say something like Tunneling the service. Once that is done, try to start Hamachi again and it should work.
Step 2:
Open LogMeinHamachi and press the power button! Once that is turned on you will be given the option to Create a New Network or Join and Existing One. Since you are hosting, you will Create the Network. All of your friends who want to play, have to get Hamachi and Join an Existing one. (This is the downside of running one with Hamachi, as all users who want to play on your server, must have hamachi and be apart of your network). Anyways after you click Create a New Network, a window will pop up with two boxes to fill in; Network ID and Network Password. The Network ID is the name of your network, and you can name it anything you want. When players join your network, they get a box to fill in to search for the name you named your Network. Moving on to Network Password, this is to restrict your Network to only people you want. Basically it puts a password of whatever you choose on your Network so people have to enter a password to get it in. Of course you would tell your friends your password to let them in! Once you have created the network, make sure it is on, it should be green next to your server name on the Hamachi Window. Select it, and by the Power button should be two strings of numbers separated by a / . The first one is the IP you will use for your server. More on that later.
Step 3:
Download the Minecraftserver.exe file from www.minecraft.net . More specifically at this link: http://www.minecraft.net/download Download under the Minecraft Server section the Minecraft Server .EXE file. The one in the first paragraph. It will ask you to keep or discard the page like normal, and you will say Keep. On your desktop you should right click, go to Create New, and select folder. Name it Minecraft Server or however you want to put it. Go to the start menu, type in minecraft_server and drag the one that has the minecraft symbol next to it onto your desktop and into your minecraft server folder. Now, run the server by double clicking the server icon in the folder, and it should open a new window and stream a bunch of sentences. You will get errors. Don't worry. By running the server it creates all the files it needs to run and maintain it self. Close the server and go to your minecraft server folder and you will find it has made a bunch of new Items!!! Go to the server.properties file (for me it just says server but if you look over to the right in the type column it should say PROPERTIES file) and open it up. It will say Windows does not know how to open this kind of file. Select the bottom dot and choose to open it with Notepad or Word or Wordpad, whatever kind of text document you have. Notepad is what I would recommend. On the properties file you will see a whole bunch of options for your server, I won't discuss all of them now, you can look them up on google quite easily. Look for the Server IP or Server IP Address option. It should be blank. Now, remember when we saw those strings of numbers next to the power button on the hamachi window? The first string is the IP you want to put it in. An easy way to get it on without having to type it in yourself is just by right clicking the string of numbers, and selecting Copy IPV4 Address. Then next to the Server IP option and after the : just paste. The Port is 25565 by default. Don't worry about that for now. Now depending on your computer, I would set the Player Limit to around 20 for now. If you set it really high the server tends to be a bit laggy unless you have a supercomputer! You can adjust these to your likings later. Almost done! Now exit out of the properties file, but don't forget to Save your Changes! Once that is closed, just run your minecraft server and it should open up and start Creating the World and the Spawn area. Once it says Done!sld;fkjasdlkfjsdf ect. then your server is up and ready! Make sure Hamachi is on when you run your server and when others join that they have hamachi on and are apart of your network on Hamachi. Oh, one more thing. When you run minecraft itself, and you don't know what to type in for the IP address? Simple! Just type in the IP address that you put in your properties file and add ":25565" without the quotations. I won't get into the mechanics of why you need that, but you have to add it. So for instance and I'm totally making this up, I would type in 8.349.54.73:25565 if that were the address of your server. I hope this helped and I can answer more questions about running your server faster, adding maps/worlds, ect! No mods though, I haven't quite gotten good enough with those to be able to teach. With that in mind if you are still confused Google Team Viewer and download it and message me privately and I will help you do the entire process of making the server myself from my computer while you can watch! You may not trust me though however. I was nervous when I first used it to let someone help me update a game that I had no idea who he was. But he got the job done and I've been thankful ever since. Now I'm just rambling, but I hope this helped! Good luck! And I'm happy to answer more questions!
Hamachi is a crutch for those who can't make port-forwarding work. The server software is free. You do however, get what you pay for with connection speed and server hardware.
I pay for server colocation with nexcess.net. They provide me some space on a shelf, power for my computer, and a 100mbit connection to the world. I host on a 3.4Ghz Xeon server with a ton of RAM. The only time I have trouble is when the computer is churning away generating new chunks of map for a lot of people who decided to run every which way. I would never go back to a VPS. The next map we do will have more pre-generated land so the chunk generation slowdown is lessened further.

You definitely don't have to pay for a Minecraft server if you set it up yourself. Even not for Bukkit.
