I've been downloading tons of mods and I never really thought about if it was safe until one day I was on the forums and I saw someone with a banner that said what program i was running what web browser I was using and it was right it also said I had a trojan exe installed. I didnt care much until I noticed my computer getting slower than usual. Now this could be as it ages because it started getting slow much later on. But I was wondering If the trojan exe is from downloading mods.
Thanks for any help
I've downloaded my share of mods and texturepacks, and my computer is running fine. It might be from something else. I would suggest a program like Norton to protect your computer.
Anything could potentially contain a virus. It's why most users on here follow the policy no pics no clicks. If something has no screenshots/videos and the user who uploaded it is "Out of the water" or anything similar, I wouldn't download the mod.

I completely follow that rule I've never downloaded anything without picsIs there actually a trojan that makes your computer slow or is it just the ones that control your computer

Those banners are also known as scareware. Designed to make the uneducated user think they have a problem, clicking them, installing some software, and probably getting a trojan in the process.
As for knowing your OS, browser, etc, all that is standard information when you browse the net and connect to other places.
Most mods are in .zip(s) or .rar(s) and the files are .class(s) the only way a mod could be a virus is if it's an .exe or .jar and you run it. very few mods are .exe(s) or .jar(s) such as single player commands and technic pack but if you go to their forum post their verified and trusted by millions. Have in mind server plugis are .jars but you don't run them, they are only used by the bukkit console. Also norton can't trace all virus's such as encrypted virus's, I use malwarebytes anti-Malware because the free version is great and it can find encrypted virus's that others can't plus it's a small program and it doesn't control your computer like norton, It will give you little notifications of incoming IP's and other harmful stuff.

Thanks I now realize this and the only .jars an.exes I used were the technic pack and the yogbox. I also don't run my server on the computer I'm talking about. Thankfully I probably don't have a trojan but thanks for the help.
Thanks for any help
I'm no longer active here since no one else seems to be.
Norton? REALLY? Go find a better AV.

Norton is just fine. I have been using Norton Antivirus for years and have never had a problem.
Right...
*on-topic* Anyway, so yeah... Be more cautious next time, Squidoodle.

Advanced Guide to server-ip and server-port settings.
Norton is literally terrible. The number of software conflicts it causes is almost as comical as it's price model.
I keep my computer fully updated, and "for years" the only thing preventing infection has been *GASP* my brain.
No unexplained CPU usage, no unexplained hard drive activity, perfectly consistent performance...
Thank you for saying that *reps*
