So after more than a month of playing vanilla I'm ready to start installing some mods, and 7Zip won't let me edit the files in Minecraft.jar. Specifically I can't drag and drop files from unzipped mod zip files into the open Minecraft.jar file (opened in 7zip.) I figure I either need a better zip program or some other program that will let me open and modify the .jar file. Or if anyone else has any suggestions for what the hell's going on, go for it. I am by no means a computer expert.
I'd never heard of J-zip before. It looks good, I'll try it, thanks. Winrar appears to be doing some ******** thing now where you have to complete some offer and give a company your money before they let you download it for "free".

7zip works perfectly... Just make sure you're not trying to drag and drop from a zipped file to the jar. You have to unzip the "from" file first.
This thread is a bit old for my post (and I understand this) but I have researched some new information which may help Jallycyn or other people with this same problem.
The first thing you need to check is if minecraft is running (I realise this was mentioned before, and many people find this suggestion infuriating as it is an obvious thing to do, but still some people may forget!)
The next thing to do is click on the "Processes" tab of Task Manager. This can be opened easily by holding down Ctrl+Alt+Del ( in this order) and then clicking on Start Task Manager (Or Similar for operating systems other than windows 7) or by holding down Ctrl+Shift+Esc (in that order). I personally use the second option as it is quicker. You must then search for Javaw.exe and then click end process.
For operating systems which are not windows you must follow similar steps, but I know not the commands to open your equivilant of task manager. The process should have the same name.
If there is no process you can always broaden your search for other uses, but I find this to be redundant as other users will use their own personal minecraft.jar folder and not the user that you are searching for the process on. Nevertheless if you think it might help in some form (and there is always the possibility however small) then search for the javaw.exe in other users.
Failing these two steps check for any third party program which may use the minecraft.jar process. This can be anything from a minecraft skin editor to skype. If you are a constant user of skype like I am and find this issue continuous then I understand how it never really works installing skins. Perhaps if the minecraft.jar file is executed before skype is opened if may fix this problem, but can be an annoying and arduous process to complete every day.
I found that by quitting skype (and therefore ending the skype.exe process) I was able to delete/modify/move the minecraft.jar file. It was only minecraft.jar that I was having troubles with in the first place as I was able to delte/modify/move all other files and folders.
The issue is when you first download a file it is zipped standardly. 7-Zip will NOT allow a drag and drop from a standard zipped file. Though you can open that file without unzipping it, you need to unzipp it using the normal windows default program. Once the mod file is completely unzipped, then you can drag and drop into 7-zip minecraft.jar.
i.e. I DLed optifine. Optifine comes in a standard (nonwinrar) format zip. I uncompressed it using windows explorer, then was able to drag and drop the content into minecraft.jar using 7-zip.

P.S. Yes, Minecraft was closed.

Hope this helps!

If you can give me what type of error it is, maybe I can help further
