The server is sending a chat message way too long. I would look at exactly what is going between client and server so I could see what it going across. I would save that to a file and run strings on it and look at the only thing I should be able to read besides my username and password. That should be the chat message. Figure out what is causing the server to send that chat message, stop it, and it should be fixed.
Having the same problem. I updated my server and minecraft to 1.2.4 and played it last night with zero problems. I then log in today and I just now encountered the issue when tryng to login to the server...
internal exception: java.io.ioexception: received string length longer than maximum allowed (121>119)

Exact same thing happening when i log into my own server
"exception: java.io.IOException: Received string length longer than maximum allow ..."
I am assuming it was crashing my game because the server in response, would - normally- poop out a long list of text.
anyway...
I FIXED it for me by:
uploading the latest craftbukkit . jar file to the server side.
now i logged in and everything was golden.. perhaps this is related to the fact Craft Bukkit has not released a "recommended" build for 1.2.4 and the Dev .Jar is just that. DEV. so maybe this was a BUg...
can not confirm this. but i can say that uploading the newest Dev version did stop this from happening to me..
yeah im getting the same thing O.o except its 137>119 im gonna try what u guys did and pray it works :LYES IT WORKED thanks to the guy who siad to update, i was getting nervous
