Okay. I ran my 1.8.1 MC launcher, which I've had ever since I downloaded it from minecraft.net, then it asked me to update. I thought that maybe something was put out, so I pasted my 1.9pr4 minecraft.jar to my desktop and pressed update. My computer's screen goes black. Granted, it's a piece of **** and Minecraft makes it do that all the time anyway, and it constantly VPU recovers on games with mediocre graphics but that's another issue. Anyway, I restarted my computer and found out that infostealer.wowcraft had been deleted as it had apparently come out of the MSN Messenger executable which was somehow indirectly run from updater.exe. I think. Anyway, then I found that not only was there a new 1.8.1 file in my bin, the 1.9pr4 one I pasted to my desktop was now 1.8.1 as well. So, I can only assume that my Minecraft launcher was somehow infected, even though I downloaded it from the official website and have had it since 1.5.
Anybody wanna explain what happened here? Has anybody else had this happen?
I don't technically need support, I guess, but I figured this was the best place to post this.
I have Norton. I think the screen going black/VPU recover stuff is just because of my CPU overheating (it's in a room with bad air conditioning and against a wall, and I don't have anywhere better to put it), and my graphics card is old. I can't get a better one because they don't make graphics cards that work for my CPU anymore. I'm getting a better one soon, so don't say "GO GET A BETTER COMPUTER >: O"
You didn't get a trojan from Minecraft; the game didn't have anything to do with it at all. You picked it up from somewhere else, it was lurking on your machine a while, and you just happened to be playing Minecraft right before your antivirus detected the trojan's presence and nuked it.
"apparently come out of the MSN Messenger executable" sounds like your antivirus software saying you got the trojan by clicking a link or downloading a file through MSN. Infostealer spreads, if I remember right, mainly through links in email and IM messages, so there's a likely source. It sounds like you think Minecraft's update ran MSN Messenger, which it didn't. MSNM runs each time you boot your machine whether you use it or not and is, if I remember, pretty difficult to convince *not* to run.
The best explanation for the jar file on your desktop downgrading itself is that you didn't copy it, but created a link by mistake. Easy to do if you use the drag-drop method to copy files.
Anyway, if you've been swapping files with friends through MSN, have them scan their machines because it's likely either one of them gave it to you or you gave it to one of them. The number of people who get malware from a legitimate corporation is tiny... you're much, much more likely getting it from someone you know or from downloads from shady sites.
