I apologize if this has been answered, I searched and couldn't find any fixes. I run a 2007 style macbook and have never had problems before. I install the .jar correctly, deleting the old one and replacing it. I've also set my render distance to tiny and deleted my whole bin file. I'm worried that this will affect the actual update because it's affecting the prerelease.
Same issue here; installed it on my parent's windows computer, but my Mac refuses to run it. Same thing when I try to install a mod: I can do it flawlessly on a windows, but no matter how perfectly I follow the instructions, my Mac won't take it.

I'm on 10.5.8. How about you?
10.5.8 as well, I'm glad to know that it isn't just my system. I've done some searching and tried everything. I hope it doesn't do this when the actual update is released.
Here's a link to the getsatisfaction post. Apparently, it may have to do with OpenGL, but no one really seems to know. It wouldn't hurt to add your voice to this!

No such luck, did this with the old minecraft.jar as well as the 1.8 one. Thanks for the suggestion though!
THIS THIS THIS
It will allow for mods, not sure about 1.8, but it's worth a shot!
Well this didn't cure the black screen but it updated my launcher!
Does your black screen flash a white box with text really fast and only once?
