I have the same problem.
I used to open minecraft and a minute or so later, it would stop, save the chunks and tell me i did not have enough memory alocated.
i have since downloaded better versions of java and direct x, alocated more memory but along the way the problem only got worse. now when i turn on the game, it works for 20 seconds after opening a world, its got lag, and then my entire screen turns off. the button on the screen has a light which is green when its on and in use, orange when its on but not used (standby) and the light turns orange when i turn on the game. it freezes the pc and i have to turn the computer off and back on again.
(i hope thats a bit more specific for you)
i also turned the graphics to fast, and the lowest of everything including tiny (for the fog)
pls help if you can. i have searched everywhere on the net and i became a member of this site purely because of this problem.
I don't know why, so if anyone would like to help, it'll be welcomed.
I don't know my exact specs, but I can tell you a couple things
I run Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit on a Dell XPS Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q 6600 2.40GHz 2.39GHz.
I have 4.00 RAM.
