I have a problem. I've recently attempted to install the Too Many Items Mod on my Minecraft. It didn't work at all for weeks. This morning (Monday, July 11, 2011) I installed the newest version of Minecraft as per the prompt on the screen. When I attempted to play Minecraft, all I got was a black screen, then what looked to be an error message for less than a single frame, then the dirt background of the usual loading screen.
I then attempted to use the spare bin file that I had created, (which still contained the .class files from the mod) but I could no longer log in. I replaced the old bin file, and tried again. It didn't work, and my latest attempt was to replace the META-INF folder and delete the mod's .class files. Needless to say, this did not work either.
My system is Windows Vista Home Premium. I have not had any performance issues in the past, and I can run Minecraft at maximum settings without issue.
Does it go blank on the loading of a map or on loading of the game?
If it's on loading of the map, it's possible that you had a item in your inventory that's causing everything to crash. If the item is was created by a game mod (even the pistons mod) then you'll need to re-install that mod OR use MCEdit to remove them item from the map.

No, it's worse than that, I can't even get to the part with the four buttons that say "Single Player" "Multiplayer" "Options" and "Texture Packs and Mods".

Yikes.
Then I can only offer vague hope.
Try updating Direct X, your display drivers and Java.

If you don't have the answer, then just say so, but don't give him such dumb advice when his game worked perfectly fine before with his current DirectX, display drivers and Java....sigh
