To call this game a 'beta' when Mojang has made well over 15 mil from it is hardly fair.
This game is getting updates, but its far from a game in 'beta testing'. Besides, this is a server issue. An issue that could easily be fixed if they invested some of their fortune into a server that could withstand more than the average population of Alaska.
I understand there will be server issues, but for the love of god, simply get better ones, or hire someone who can keep it up at a more frequent rate. This 'DERP, MINECRAFT.NET IS DOWN LOL' crap is getting old.

When you boil it all down, this game is still in beta. Mojang is no doubt suffering growing pains from the sudden influx of popularity of the game ($15M is a huge sum for a relatively indie company to deal with). I wouldn't be surprised if they're still hiring staff to accommodate the demand we're putting on them.
Honestly, gamers need to learn patience. Or at least reign in our multiple personalities. When the game is up and running we praise our various deities for things as intrinsically simple and entertaining as Minecraft. But when there's downtime we gather our tallow candles, lay them out in a pentagram in the kitchen and beckon the names of the most heathen of demons to devour the soul of Notch himself.
So caaaalm down. No, the game isn't perfect and Mojang definitely has room for improvement when you place them back to back with companies like Blizzard or Crytek. But you can't realistically expect them to perform to the same standards of companies that have been established for years or decades. If you do that, you're going to be pissed off fairly regularly.
In short, be happy to have Minecraft. It's a great idea that was fortunate enough to succeed in an industry that's very hard for indie companies to make it in. If you schedule most of your free time around the game, however, prepare to be disappointed here and there. Minecraft is, in spite of Mojang's net income, still in beta.
You really can't apply the "It's a beta" argument. You don't pay for true betas. It may be in beta form, but adding a price tag does not make it a beta product, and therefore should maintain a decent level of service.
My friends and I are now considering the use of a hacked client just so we can continue playing on our server when unreasonable outages tied into a flawed authentication system like this occur.
This is not a troll post, merely a point of view from an otherwise happy customer.
Woah, is it just me, or is the full game not out yet and the creators have the servers down for a reason.. maybe to fix some of the glitches associated with minecraft to further its production? Quit whining, you got to get a game before it even came out for a relatively cheap price. Don't expect multiplayer servers to always be up a your whim. Would you prefer the game never be updated/ released in full? No, because then you would really rage out on the forums. Remember, you all agreed to pay to play on the Beta, you're not getting you're money back. You chose to take the deal and get the cheaper version and what do you know? you'll get the game too.

A brain....wow sir, I would sig this, but it's too long.
lol ;P
ofc he didn't! He almost never does unless it's planned or going to be for a long long time.
I rarely had this problem in alpha.. but this is 3 days in a row. I thought they "fixed it" so that the server would be more stable..

I love you
Minecraft may be beta but authentication systems definitely are not.
True, good point.
