So I've been playing minecraft without problems for about 4 months, but suddenly a few days ago I started having problems.
The Problem:
I can log in and patch the game properly, and I can enter worlds both on single player and online, but after a short time (usually around 10 seconds) everything stops working. When it stops working, the first thing that happens is that everything locks up and it starts to repeat whatever sound was playing over and over. After around 5 seconds of this, random lines of color will start streaking across the screen (not just in the minecraft window, but over everything). If I alt F4 before the lines appear, my system recovers and I can continue running it, but after 5 seconds the system is completely locked up and I have to reboot. There is no error message or any real inclination as to what's going wrong.
Things I have tried:
Forcing V-Sync through NVIDEA control panel
Disabling sounds
Monitoring system heat (it stays well below danger levels, usually 30 degrees or lower)
Reinstalling graphics and sound drivers
Reinstalling the game
Reverting to an older version of the game
Reinstalling java
None of these have worked.
My System Specs:
OS: Windows 7 32 bit (SP1)
RAM: 3GB
Processor: AMD Athelon II X2 250, 3GHz dual core
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
So if anyone has suggestion of what I could possibly do, any help is appreciated.
I have now also tried:
A system restore to a few months ago when the game was working
Reverting to and older version of my drivers
There is also something new when I try the in-browser version of the game. The screen flickers a few times, then a driver error message appears saying:
"Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Model Driver, Version 258.96 stopped responding and has successfully recovered"
I have the exact same problem and have tried all the same things, no luck with anything unfortunatly, and no one else seems to know anything about this error, although the streaks on screen could suggest a graphics driver error I think...
My System Specs:
OS: Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate
RAM: 4GB
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz
Video Card: NVIDIA GTX 260
I think I have found a solution by downloading nVidia System tools, I am not entirely sure how it could have helped the situation, but since installing it i managed to get about 10 min gameplay in with no errors or graphics faults of any kind. nVidia system manager (part of nVidia system tools) did not detect any anomalies in disk usage either (note that I had it open whilst playing minecraft).
I am not sure if this is just a temporary fix or if it actually resolved the problem.
Hard drive usage jumps to 100% probably because your os is doing a core dump. this is pretty much normal when an os crashes. since the screen goes all wonky, I'd say something is up with the graphics system. it could be bad drivers. I'd be inclined to suspect that your hardware may be failing, but i'm ruling it out since you can play other games without issue.
Double posting to bump, so that I can tell everyone that installing the Nvidia system tools for my card totally fixed my crashing problem
Thank you SO Much I can finally afk without leaving the server

Just thought I would mention this, but the nvidia driver ONLY drops to kernel mode when it overheats. This explains all the lines, the flickering, etc. I have seen it before, and it is quite common (on all graphics cards that overtemp). This is usually caused by having poor airflow, a bad fan, or the driver not clocking the fan to the correct speed (you can use that tool you are using, or rivatuner to adjust the fan speed of the card to keep it cool).
I dont think this error is caused by overheating, as even when I run the game with my GPU temperature stable at 54 degrees celcius the game still glitches. I am now using eVGA 2.0.0 to control graphics clocking and cooling.

Ok I think I have a permenant solution.
Using nVidia control panel, create a custom profile for 'javaw.exe', select the v-sync setting, and change it to 'force on'.
I have encountered no problems since doing this.
Setting a profile in the control panel did not fix it for me either. Computer hard freezes - Hard drive read/write light goes out. Keeps displaying last image rendered to screen. :sleep.gif:

I just reformatted my HD to try and resolve this. no luck. (obviously a clean install of MC)

Definitely minecraft related.

Same problem. I also have an Nvidia graphics card.

Very weird to see my computer lock up.

To download nVidia system tools go to http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_system_tools_6.00.html.
Please post any results you may have from this solution.

My entire screen goes black and I am forced to reboot.
Installing Nvidia system tools now, I'll test it out and post results.
Nvidia 9800GT btw.
Not sure if it makes a difference

Just my $.02
Plus this solution seems to be only temporary as my minecraft is still crashing shortly after loading a world.
Using nVidia control panel, create a custom profile for 'javaw.exe', select the v-sync setting, and change it to 'force on'.
I have encountered no problems since doing this.
