as far as the OP is concerned. You have 1g or RAM and 128mb of VRAM...if i read that correctly.
I very highly doubt your PC will run MC, and if it does i dont expect it run optimally.
Aditionally, for anyone running a MC server, set it to 1g of Ram(or higher). I have a server with bukkit and it defaults at 512mb, i had to edit the command liek to read 1024 instead.
I've had this problem as soon as i first got minecraft, in August/September last year.
I've deleted every minecraft mod that i had, and i deleted some unused programs on my computer.
While ingame, i have the chat lagg problem. Its gotton much worse, but the first time i tried SMP, it had a good 3 minute lagg. Now its gone into me unable to talk. And the 'Falling through void' is usually happeneing 90% of the time.
It's Horribly annoying
I've been looking for an answer the whole time aswell.
Someone told me that people were getting it from the recent 1.03 update. I'm, not sure whats happening. It may be possible that not enough ram is in the process, or a firewall/protection program on the computer is dissallowing it.
Testing is further required.
I have a Gigabyte (company name) HD4350.
512MB
GODR2
Hi DEf - Ful HD Resolution
I have ATI Radeon GRaphics.
Does anyone have the same in that?.
I use SpyBot as my protectional device.
My dad set up the computer, i wouldnt know a thing or 2 about it, so im just remebereing things, and looking at boxes.
Post Computer Specs, Compare, Then Alter - thats how we might be able to fix it.
I have the same problem, but it seems that there's a bit more to it then just the computer and it's settings and/or parameters.
I was playing SMP on my own computer for hours on end and I had no issues at all (client side), my brother has a laptop and it was kind of slow and all when the server was created, so he didn't play much at all. the next day I still play fine on my computer and when he gets home I decide to let him play on my computer while trying to find and fix the problem on his laptop.
This is when I'm now having the same problems as everyone else has. I was on a small piece of the world no bigger then 50x50 blocks (aproximation) and saw similar semi loaded small pieces of caves here and there. I figured that it was possibly just the graphics not loading but the world was still around so I walked off the ledge and just fell forever. disconnecting and reconnecting loaded me at the spot where I started to fall every time.
When I went over to my computer to log on my character so that I can move him over a little and not just be constantly falling I found that I only managed to load what I did on the laptop and I was again forever stuck falling.
This makes me think that the problem is server side and somehow client-server transfer is somehow corrupting the file.
Other things of note:
-I was unable to gather any materials when I was on the partially loaded map, you can dig and break blocks, but nothing came out of them
-I was unable to use the workbench
-when falling I was able to move a little left or right and get into caves as I fell down, when I did land I took no fall damage, no lava damage and the NPCs weren't doing anything
Has anyone else tried this from multiple computers?
I have the same issue, been burrowing around the affected chunks actually, it usually forces them to try and load and they get about halfway in SOMETIMES. Most the time it doesnt work at all. Hey, I use it to tell where the minerals are lol cause the edges of the blue, you can tell where the coal/gold/iron etc are lol

So it appears that the computer that the server was on started downloading things on utorrent so it slowed the upload speed. The world does appear now, it is slow to appear, and my interaction with the world is now hindered, but I guess we're still in beta, so it's one problem at a time.
Has anyone else tried this from multiple computers?
I have, and multiple operating systems using the same connection.
My laptop had this problem and was running windows 7. My boyfriends laptop is lower quality but running ubuntu. After 3 days of trying to find a fix I decided to switch my laptop to ubuntu and it's fixed. No more block/chat lag... and better fps as well.
I've seen some linux posts about lag or crashing but are fixes for them. I think there's something in 1.3 that's not working right with windows.
It seems, when you do get on, you can destroy blocks - but you cant get what the drop. Also, after a while it went back. Doors work for aproxximately 1 minute/is over for 1 minute, then randomly closes.
You cant enter chests/furnaces ETC. but you can go into your inventory. I found, that when a friend of mine threw 5 dirt blocks, i collected them after about 5 seconds of me being ontop of them. So the game recognises me moving. Its only when i destroyed a block, that everything corrupted itself.
Also, i joined my friends server.
I moved around alot, and he told me that i was jsut staying at the spawn, unmoved.
I think, as someone said above, that the transfer file corrupts itself.
Maybe something to do with the victims connection/internet.
Then again, if its my internet, then Why can my sister play perfectly on another desktop, with the same interent connection/network.
Same security.
Smae internet.
And she has less ram, and more stuff on the computer.
Her SSP laggs alot aswell.
It just doesnt make any sense :/
Why is it always the good intentioned people get unfairly punished from nothing of their doing.

MC runs perfect at 100+ fps, and it does run MC with no problems whatsoever besides the server thing. Does anyone think it might be our network cards?
im running windows vista 64 bit on a gateway 2.3 i think with 4 gigs of ram. im running the sdk mod with it and its being dumb and loading none or a little. and then it just "times me out" soon enough and things like glass dont break when shot at
How can they release a game and not provide any support...
Great job on letting the community just figure out how to fix the problems (y) .
Minecraft is awesome game and it's still in development. All games have problems and this is one of them, they are constantly working on the game and hope to make the game the best they can make. As for "How can they release a game...", they have not "released" it yet so don't get your hopes up on it being perfect.
I am having the same problem as all of you i thought i was the only one who had this problem hopefully someone can figure how to fix this its so depressing seeing people talk about a fun server and you cant even play with them.

No no no notch is bringing out patch after patch and old problems STILL have not been fixed but he has the Freaking team work on FREAKING wolfs WTF fix the damn multiplayer i didnt pay for this game to play by myself!
Same problem here. Single-player is fine. Multi-player is unusable. I don't have any problems with my internet connection. Other games my ping is fine. Minecraft SMP lag is a couple of minutes and causes java error disconnects.
Please confirm that you are aware of the issue Mojang.
It has been raised quite a few times and Mojang doesn't do anything about it. Please give us some support, that's what we payed for.
