Yep, non-fullscreen community works for me...also, when you add Minecraft.exe, you have to launch it from within Steam, otherwise it wont list as being played
-snip-
How did you do that? I can't get mine to.
Are you talking about calling Steam community? I had to Shift+Tab about 4 times til it finally came up, for some reason Steam is picky on when it wants to show up.
I'm also having this problem.
I have other games added as non-steam games and it doesn't work
I can't get the browser or chat to come up in game.
I've tried liking to the launcher, the older launcher I have saved.
I tried linking to the .jar but as it doesn't show up under the games it has listed, and browse wont show .jar files I'm not sure how to try that any further.
Anyone else having issues?

There is a Minecraft.exe file you connect to steam with, I think by default its in your documents folder(I have no idea why), but you link the *.exe to steam, then you right click on the game in your Steam Library and "Add Shortcut to Desktop" or whatever it says...linking your *.jar file does absolutely nothing...its like telling left 4 dead to launch using the pak01_dir.vpk file...it just doesnt work.

Still no effect, it simply launches the game, and then I'm not able to use steam chat or browser.
My steam also only says i'm running minecraft for about 5 seconds.
I guess it'll just have to wait :tongue.gif:
Thanks anyway

Why do people get involved in this kind of crap (Steam)? If it doesn't run your game the way you want it to, don't use the site/software/whatever. That's my suggestion. Note: Try running your game with the site/software before you get all involved next time. Then you won't have the pain of losing all the things you've worked for and/or all your friends. If there's any way you can argue against my statement, please do, and it can't be "But I'll lose all my progress and friends and crap!" because I just explained above what to do BEFORE you get all involved. Other suggestion: Just run it as Steam if you can't get it non-Steam. Works for me.

Youve never touched Steam have you? because everything you just said made absolutely no sense, thats not how Steam works.
For everyone who has never used Steam, don't reply to this topic, because you're seriously not helping the OP with his issues and just cluttering up the topic with useless posts.
I uninstalled MineCraft, and this is what I did, step by step, and I stayed in game to verify it worked.
1. Install Minecraft
2. Create a "Minecraft" folder in "Program Files"
3. Go to where your default download location is (where your minecraft file downloaded from the site)
4. There should now be a "Minecraft.exe" file there, move this file to your "Program Files/Minecraft/" folder
5. Open Steam Library, click on "Add Non-Steam Game"
6. Click "Browse" on the window that comes up
7. Navigate to your "Program Files/Minecraft/" folder and double-click "Minecraft.exe"
8. Click "Add Selected Programs" once you verify there is a check next to the newly added "Minecraft.exe"
9. Back in your library right click on "Minecraft" and select "Create Desktop Shortcut"
10. Now launch Minecraft from the desktop and you should have access to the Steam Cloud
I just removed Minecraft and did everything back from square one, of course you dont have to go that far, but I have verified 100% that this works.
Another thing to check is to verify you can even access the Steam Cloud
1. Right click on Steam icon in taskbar
2. Click on "Settings"
3. Click on "In-Game" tab and verify "Enable Steam Community In-game" is checked
4. Go to "Downloads+Cloud" tab and verify "Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for games which support it" is checked
I have touched steam, recently after I made my first post, and I got Minecraft to register as a Steam game fine. My second post made sense to me, it's basically saying:

If you like your sites to run your games then make sure the site runs your game before you get all involved with that site.

What if I'm already involved with this site?
I ain't the kinda man who runs from one site to another just when things get rough.
I just wasn't raised that way sir, we talk it out, and I take that site out to the beach and we dance til the sun comes up.

Steam runs Minecraft just fine, theres just a certain way of doing it, thats all Im saying, my post wasnt meant as an attack on you rugar, but your post didnt make any sense, and you were in a way insulting the people who are trying to make it work, I was simply defending them.
Hey there. I encountered this same problem, and tried every direction listed in this thread and was not able to resolve it. Running the game directly through steam, running a shortcut through steam, adding the game to steam and creating a desktop shortcut. All of those failed. Then I found that people using Raptr were having problems tracking the game also, but only some.
I managed to track the problem down specifically to the 64-bit of Java. I went into Add/Remove Programs and removed this specifically: "Java(TM) 6 Update 23 64-bit)"
I left "Java(TM) 6 Update 23."
That instantly solved the problem. It appears Steam cannot track the 64-bit version of java correctly, but has no issues at all with the 32-bit. You may also try to change your windows default application set to handle java files and set it to specifically use the 32-bit without removing the 64-bit version, and that may work as well, but I did not try it.
Hope this helps for those who still encounter this problem.

Well, I don't have the 64-bit version of Java in my list of installed programs, just the Java 6 Update 23 and SE Development Kit (probably for my Java Programming class).
So... that kind of removes that.

What is actually running when you play Minecraft is javaw.exe or java.exe (You should be able to see this in Task Manager), can try adding one of those instead?
Yeah, but then it only launches Java and not actually Minecraft... how would I make Steam open JavaW.exe -> Minecraft.jar?
Quote from epikal »
Edit: OK that doesn't explain why it works for your friends!
Yeah, really... wtf. Mind = Blown

Are you launching the game directly by the EXE or through a shortcut? I know when I launched the game via a shortcut Steam, for some reason, wouldnt pick it up. I ended up making a shortcut to the folder on the desktop, then going in there and launching minecraft directly.)
I've been linking it to the .exe directly, but I'll actually try linking it to a shortcut instead for the luls, maybe it will work.
EDIT: Didn't work. :sad.gif:
EDIT2: Well, I managed to get Steam to keep the game saying that I'm playing it by downloading the .jar version of the launcher and running it through that. Good enough I guess, but it's still not letting me using the In-Game Community.
Where would I find the .jar version of the launcher?

I was going to post to say the same thing. I'd been running the 32-bit version of java and never had this issue. However, I ran into random black screens in Minecraft, and people suggested installing the 64-bit verison of java to correct that - so I did. As soon as I did that, I began seeing the issue with steam showing me playing Minecraft for only a few seconds before going back to 'online.'
I double checked and all of my friends who have had that problem before I ever did are also running the 64-bit version of java.
I suppose it's better to actually be able to play the game (without the black screen crashes), but if I continue to run into those, then I may uninstall the 64-bit version of java.
I too also use the old launcher, so that's not it.
Sorry to bump this, but there's a pretty quick and easy solution to this problem... Rather than use the new, shiny launcher, just use the pre-patch 1.3 launcher instead! (Link provided by bubba1234119.) I'm not sure what the big differences between the two launchers are, aside from the fact the old launcher will always update your game files to the newest version, but the old launcher won't immediately bat Steam away when run. You log into the game perfectly fine, can play multiplayer, and you can access the Steam community just fine!
You're welcome. :3

I'm not that hard to find… if you know where to look.
I don't have any problems getting Steam to run Minecraft or getting it to bring up the Community Overlay, but I can't get it to stay in my Library. I add it as a non-steam game, and it stays there as long as Steam is open, but if I ever close Steam Minecraft won't be in my Library when I open it again. I actually have this problem with any non-steam game I try to add... :\
Removing Java 64-bit fixed the problem for me. It's weird because I have three Windows 7 64bit machines. Two of them have both 32 and 64-bit Java and Steam works just fine. On the third machine, I had to uninstall 64-bit Java.
The only conclusion I can reach is that if you start the game the first time with only 32-bit installed, it will continue to use the 32-bit even if 64-bit is installed afterwards. If both Javas are already installed when the game is first run, it defaults to the 64-bit Java, and uninstalling Java 64-bit seems to be the fix.
I had the exact same issue launching Minecraft through Steam... but I fixed it! In short, I just downloaded the minecraft.jar from the website and made an .exe point to it so Steam could open it. If you need instructions on how to do that, I put them here: http://getsatisfaction.com/mojang/topics/minecraft_as_non_steam_game_crashes_when_attempting_to_launch_from_steam
I didn't have to reinstall/remove/change steam, minecraft, or java to do any of this. Let me know if this helps!
