This has happened to me with two different worlds, now, both of which had 100+ on them. I'm not sure what causes it but my computer has blue screened twice in the last two months. It doesn't do this with any other programs--even graphic intensive ones--just Mine Craft and otherwise I have no issues.
My biggest problem is that my world gets really screwed up whenever this happens (to the point where it's useless and SUPER glitchy) and I was wondering if there was a way for me to "back up" my save files somehow. Could I just copy the "world" folder onto a USB and keep that as backup? And if so, would I just replace the current world file with my USB version if this happens again?
I appreciate your help. This has been VERY frustrating and all my work is gone, so thank you for your help and I appreciate your responses.

Yes, just make a copy of your .minecraft\saves folder. I have a "minecraft backup" folder in My Doc's, and have all 5 world folders copy/pasted there. I tend to do that every time know I'm done playing for a while.

And that isn't the world folder? (Sorry if I seem inept. It's been a rough week for technology and me.) How do I get to the saves folder?

... no.. .minecraft\saves contains 5 folders (IF you have 5 worlds made)... Word1, World2 ect.... Copy the "WORLD" folders (whichever you want to backup) and PASTE them in your folder that you want to KEEP your BACKUPS in.
