My friend had this same problem. I suggested he delete the bin folder inside the .minecraft folder and that fixed it. you don't need to copy and paste anything cause your saves and maps aren't stored in the bin folder. The hardest part was finding the .minecraft folder in the first place. For windows it seems to be classified as a hidden folder so doing a search wouldn't find it unless you specificly told it to search hidden files and folders. This may also apply to macs. So if you can find the .minecraft folder just locate the bin folder inside and delete it and it will redownload when you open the game up again. All your settings and saved games will remain intact.
Many programs have a folder called bin so its important that if its a bin folder not in the .minecraft folder then its the wrong one. Like I said the .minecraft folder is likely a hidden folder so when doing a search for it you may need to make sure you are searching hidden folders. I don't know how the macs work but I imagine they have a simelar search function as windows for locating files and folders.
yes, i was able to give the command to show all hidden files and folders and then searched for .minecraft folder... the only thing i was able to find is that when i right-click the minecraft app it has an option to show its contents, now that's where the "minecraftlauncher.jar" is so im guessing that's the .minecraft folder.
