HEY SO I NOTICED THAT THE MINECRAFT.APP WAS RUNNING 32 BIT JAVA 1.5 ON MY MACBOOK PRO AND SINCE 1.5 ISNT SUPPORTED ANYMORE I FIGURED WHY NOT TRY AND MAKE IT USE 64BIT JAVA 1.6?
YO BEFORE YOU START BACKUP EVERYTHING!!!! LITERALLY EVERYTHING!!!! YOUR SAVEGAMES MINECRAFT.APP AND EVERY FILE YOU CHANGE. OK?
HERE WE GO:
MAKE A COPY OF MINECRAFT.APP AND THEN RIGHT CLICK MINECRAP.APP AND CHOOSE 'SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS'
GO INTO THE 'CONTENTS' FOLDER AND BACKUP INFO.PLIST. DOUBLE CLICK INFO.PLIST AND IT SHOULD OPEN PROPERTY EDITOR
EXPAND THE 'JAVA' SECTION AND LOOK FOR THE KEY THAT SAYS 'JVMVERSION'. CHANGE THIS VALUE FROM '1.5+' TO '1.6+'
THEN EXPAND THE SECTION THAT SAYS 'JVMARCHS'. ADD A NEW ITEM ABOVE I386 THAT SAYS 'x86_64'. SO NOW IT SHOULD HAVE A LIST THAT GOES X86_64, I386, THEN PPC. SAVE THIS FILE AND EXIT OUT OF PROPERTY EDITOR.
NEXT CLICK ON THE 'MACOS' FOLDER IN MINECRAFT.APP. THERE SHOULD BE A FILE CALLED 'JAVAAPPLICATIONSTUB' AND YOU SHOULD BACK IT UP BECAUSE WERE GONNA REPLACE IT.
THEN YOU HAVE TO COPY JAVAAPLICATIONSTUB FROM /SYSTEM/LIBRARY/FRAMEWORKS/JAVAVM.FRAMEWORK/RESOURCES/MACOS AND PUT IT INTO MINECRAFT.APP/CONTENTS/MACOS
FINALLY DOUBLE CLICK MINECRAFT.APP AND CROSS YR FINGERS!! YOU CAN CONFIRM THAT IT IS RUNNING IN 64BIT BY PEEPING IT IN ACTIVITY MONITOR
and offer MC more RAM. Should speed things up when using HD Textures and a high drawing distance. You may set it higher if you have more than 4 GB of RAM. I'm running this with 4 GB and it works fine.

I'm getting stuck on this. When I double-click on info.plist it brings up text editor instead of the property editor. I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8 build 10K540. I have a Mac Mini 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of RAM.
I have Mac Lion and used the instructions to run MineCraft in 64 bit and it works great. It sure seems faster to me. Is it just me?
The problem is that when I login to MineCraft now a message that blinks on the screen really quickly. I was able to grab a print screen which says, "Do you want application "Minecraft.app" to accept incoming network connections? Clicking on Deny may limit the applications behavior. This setting can be changed in the Firewall pain of Security preferences."
I went to System Preferences -> "Security and Privacy" -> FireWall -> put in my password and went to Advanced settings and added Minecraft to the list with "Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections."
Apparently MineCraft isn't using signed updates or something so that it isn't allowing me to update MC to 1.8. Do I have to undo the patch for 64 bit mode to update and then go back?
Also, I would like to install textures packs. Preferable HD ones. Is that compatible with this? Does that also break MC from being able to update?
I have MineCraft 1.7.3 and have it setup so that it runs in 64 bit.
Starting today (Saturday, September 15, 2011) my password for MineCraft no longer is working. It has been working since I got it. "Remember password" has been clicked and it has remembered my password all this time. Suddenly that isn't working anymore.
I went to MineCraft's website and reset my password (told it I forgot and had it send me a link to create a new password and I did so). I am able to log into MineCraft's website with no problems now but I still am getting, "Login Failed. Play offline. Try again". I play offline and of course it says it isn't a paid version. If I go out and try to login and it still doesn't work.
PS: For obvious reasons it also isn't downloading 1.8
What I ended up doing was downloading deleting my current versions of MineCraft (32 bit/64 bit and backups -- I use TimeMachine for backups so I could always go back -- and downloading MineCraft 1.8 and verified that it worked with my MineCraft license/login. I then converted it to 64 bit (after backing up the bits) and it runs great.
So … nevermind. The instructions still work. YEA!!!

Thanks. I'll do that.
