So I was having the problem like most of you people on the forums are where your game would crash randomly and then post an error document on your desktop.
But I was just ignoring it and if it happened it happened and I have been playing Single Player for awhile now and wanted to get a picture of my map so I went and downloaded the Cartograph program but to use it you had to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86), so I did that and voila no more crashes and no more stupid notepad error texts.
Some of you might of figured this out already but I haven't seen anything about it so I thought I would post it for you guys. If this method works for you guys please post so maybe we can get this stickied that way everyone will be able to play this amazing game without any problems like this.

Thanks for posting this!
I installed the runtime package (had the 2008 prior) and I still get the error log on desktop. Minecraft never crashed for me though so this may not be the right fix. I'm still pretty eager to get rid of the error log issue... next update maybe I hope.

Sorry it didn't work for you, your issue might be within the game files rather than just your computer what you can do though is try deleting the bin folder in Application Data/.minecraft and then restarting minecraft and re-downloading the files to see if that helps if it doesn't then I would contact Notch and see what he says

I've been having a similar problem. When playing SMP, I've been getting reappearing chunks after a few minutes of play followed by a crash and one of these stupid hs_err_pid**** errors.
I installed Microsofts Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86). I have to admit I was extremely skeptical. But much to my surprise and it worked flawlessly. I'm not sure why, but I guess it makes sense.
Here's what Microsoft has to say about it:
"The Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package installs runtime components of Visual C++ Libraries required to run applications developed with Visual C++ on a computer that does not have Visual C++ 2010 installed."
If anyone cares here are my crappy laptops specs:
Windows XP SP 3
Intel Pentium M 1.6 ghz
Mobile Intel 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset
512 RAM
If you're getting the hs_err_pid file and it doesn't seem like Minecraft is crashing, see this viewtopic.php?f=17&t=90943 if you have a creative soundblaster or other card, it could be the openal file. Grabbing that updater from creative fixed the error for me.

Thanks for the tip. I'll check that out when I get home tonight. Thanks man!
One thing I noticed is when Minecraft updates, it replaces the openal file with the standard one and you have to go back and manually copy the good one in.

OK im still having this problem but im not able to try fixing the openal file because i dont have that data i only have a saved shortcut which i click and it goes to run which brings me to a login screen. i login and the screen goes black and shutsdown leaving me with an HS_ERR_PID bull****. so why is this so. the first download link for windows doesnt work for me and the other is justt a run to crash file even if i save it.!
