Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager (hardware page for WinXP users) -> network adapters -> double click your primary LAN connection -> power management -> uncheck the top box for 'allow windows to turn off this device to save power'.
Should stop you losing connection due to Minecraft doing silly things.
Here is the fix that worked for me. I have been at this 13 hours testing things with Realtek, Atheros, Intel, Broadcom, etc cards. The ONLY thing that has solved this issue for me is to assign a static IP to my network adapter. It has now worked on all of those brands of cards, also did an nVidia just to mix it up. I hope this helps.
The static IP thing I did solved it on my 680i mobo... actually it's always been static, that's what lead me to my revelation since it could play but no other PCs in the house could.
This thread is not getting the attention it should for the quantity of people getting affected by this socket exeption. I really tought my problem was fixed when I changed the number of transit buffers of my ethernet card to 512... But it just takes the game longer to crash
I'm hoping someone will read this... :sad.gif:

[edit]
Man there are some alternatives like setting the IP to be static... I tried that and my internet crashed.(YAY FOR INTERNET CRASHING EVERYTIME I TRY TO USE MINECRAFT). I belive the standard player of minecraft isn't all that expert in twitching with windows/mac config, we should be counting with a greater tech support since we all paid.
But MC is still in alpha... I don't know... I just wanna play the game!!!!! :' (
[EDIT 2]
My processor is Intel core quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz
This totally needs more attention. I used to be able to connect just fine, but now everyone in my apartment quad is playing on our local server while I can't. On top of that, messing with static IP configurations and stuff is out of the question, since we don't know the router password and can't plug our own in >.<
I really loved SMP before this. Please Notch, make this a top priority.
On that uplifting note, hi guys, I'm new to the forums here haha
Everybody who encounters this issue, please say what Processor you have.
I am using an AMD Phenom II x4 955 Quad Core...
I get this error after removing blocks aswell...
BUT, and this is a big but
I played the game on my sister's PC (hers is an Intel i5 i think, i know its intel) and i didnt get the error. All my friends who play on an intel dont get the error, and from what ive seen on the forums, people using AMDs get the error..
Maybe a coincidence, but i dont think so at this point.
I'm running on an Intel and get this error. Has anyone gotten a fix for this? I keep crashing my friend's server because I keep getting this error and "illegal stance" errors.

I HAVE FOUND A SOLUTION
Worked flawlessly for me last night, creating mines, playing normally. Not a single Java error (Just game black screens, but i get that offline too)
Alls i did was... switch from my old USB Wireless stick (using an Atheros Driver) to a D-Link Wireless stick (I believe using a D-link driver?). That was all i did.

Wait, what?!
I'm not following... You... wha.
Explain PLEEASE?! I'm a n00b in hardware in general. Or was that software? :S
(Bump)
Seems like I only get this problem on smp and when my OS is windows xp. Really odd how this problem still occurs for so long with really no notice. O.o

I switched Internet cards.
I went from
Retail Plus USB Wireless card (Using an Atheros Driver)
to
D-Link USB Wireless card (Using, im guessing, a D-link driver)
Yup when I had windows 7 it worked without a problem. Though smp just hates windows xp users it seems like. Running the same machine and update java and the vid card and still it acts like after 30 seconds in smp a creeper comes and attacks my net.
ive been receiving this same error whenever i am killed or die. the servers connection resets, and everyone has to rejoin. i rent a dedicated server.
its been happening since the thanksgiving update.
heres the error message i recieved after dying in lava a few minutes ago:

What happens is I will join a server, I spawn on the map and then just start falling and then after a few seconds start falling from the spawn point again (I would re-appear back up). After a few times of falling and re-appearing I would stay on the surface of the map and walk around etc. For the entire ordeal I cannot see half the map, it is just not appearing for me and I can just see sky. Then I get the error above.
If I do manage to get in the server and walk around for a bit (which is hardly ever) it is very laggy.
This problem needs to be fixed, as by the looks of it many people get this problem.

I have an nForce 680i mobo with its built in NICs. No luck with disabling all of the checksum options. Right now they are re-enabled.
I'm connect through my router; I turned off DHCP and manually entered my IP and DNS entires and all that jazz but no go.
I'm hoping someone will read this... :sad.gif:
