I've tried both versions of the downloadable minecraft.exe but I keep getting the microsoft Dun! sound. I might have missed the answer to this somewhere but I've tried the few things I've seen that seem close and nothing changed, Thank you for any help!
Lol, I did pull a noob myself. I forgot to mention that I'm running windows xp and yes I'm only using the windows versions and have not tried any other type.
I also am having this issue on a Windows XP SP3 machine. The machine is old (a Dell Optiplex GX620), but the browser version works fine. I've tried running the jar and the executable with no luck. I've updated the video drivers, updated Java, even installed the JDK just to see. Still no luck.
Specs:
Pentium 4 3.40GHz
2GB of RAM
Intel 82945G Express
I can provide other info to help troubleshoot if anybody has ideas.
I also have an older computer, a dell Dimension 2400 Pent 4 2.66 ghz, 2 gig RAM, Nvidia Video Card 6200, windows XP sp3.
BTW, I am able to play single player creative via the "browser" -- which is great fun. Thank you for the great game.
However, It would be nice to play on my laptop offline. Being unable to get the Minecraft.exe to execute, I am unable to do so.
Again, I have tried deleting the minecraft.jar file and restarting : no luck. Drivers and Java are up to date. I am able to play via the Browser, but would like to play offline.
I was able to get the jar to run. When using the command provided on the download page I get a memory error in Java. So I modified the memory parameter to this:
This gets the game to run no problems. So now I am wondering if I need to change some setting in Java to prevent it from trying to give the executable too much memory. I'll try this out and post anything I find.
Thanks for the replies, and ppl still trying -- awesome community.
However, after some thought, I just do not care. I'm playing in the browser, I played around on my laptop and got it to work (??). It just will not work on my desktop except via the browser.
You know what? I don't care. This game and community is so awesome, I am so pleased I got on the ground floor (er will at least before it went to beta). Please consider me a very very happy customer. Minecraft rocks! <3
I made a new thread with the information I found that' similar to the post with listed above about editing the .jar. It has all the steps and such on how to do it. So if you're still having issues you can try that. Thanks all for your posts!
Green, any chance for a link to this thread you made?
I am still able to play via the browser option, but the install file will not execute on my desktop. Now my laptop is doing the same thing (??).
Java has been un-installed and re-installed. Deleted everything, tried to re-install : problem persists. I am back into trying to fix this because of the many mods now out there. Obviously, you can't mod the browser version of the game. :sad.gif:
So : I am re-opening this ticket, or looking for link. Pls help a humble noob out. <3
Update : Found Green's awesome post, followed it and this solved my problem at once! You pwn man!

I have tried the basic suggestions -- delete you minecraft.jar file and retry -- same thing. checked Java and reinstalled it -- it looks good.
This is probably a very noobish thing, but the same thing is happening to me. Any advice pls?
