It might have to do with your internet ports not allowing minecraft to connect to the update server. I'm not too sure though. You might want to check out port forwarding if you're using a router. Other than that, have you tried running Minecraft.exe as an administrator? Also, you aren't able to play it in your browser?
Might be something to do with the java you installed.
Same thing happened to me. I'm running a MAC with Snow Leopard. It's fully updated.
My bar doesn't freeze, it just wont even ask me if I want to update. If I try to redownload it, it just says it's still outdated and that I need to update it.
You might want to try deleting the folder for the appdata of minecraft. I'm not sure where it would be on a MAC, but for windows I believe it's "C:\users\%USERNAME%\appdata\roaming\.minecraft".
Try to back up your save files before you do though. Then try a fresh install of minecraft.

I would love to know the port to minecraft. since its not on portfowarding
I just bought the game and I feel like I've wasted so much time trying to figure it out. I've done everything: deleted the .bin folder, the .jar file, re-installed/updated Java, everything. My Internet is fine, so no, it's not that.
This is frustrating as hell, can someone please help me out with this?
I was getting the same problem when 1.2.4 came out. The port forwarding, setting it to run as administrator, and deleting the bin folder didn't help me, but changing the compatibility mode did.
This is what comes up when i try to open the browser Or the minecraft.ExE
And the green bar does not move.
I just bought the game before trying to play it so i never played it yet
I did update my graphics card today and Java.
