I think something should be done. I want my name to be changed to Mr. Player, but if my mom and I had known the names wouldn't be changed, so I'm stuck with this.
More people use Twitter than Minecraft and Twitter lets you change your username as many times and as often as you please, so I don't see why Minecraft can't be the same way.
I did the same thing and used my name when signing up not realizing the significance of it. As for getting a refund and then getting the game again, seriously? It should be as simple as updating a database field. Notch only has to look at our handles to see that they do in fact contain our name and isn't just a case of wanting it changed for no real reason. It's a valid concern, and there should be a warning or something up on the site at the very least that tells you when you register you will be stuck with that name and it will be publicly viewable.

I made a username that I didnt know would be my actual username I just did it so I could make a minecraft.net account and now I am nearly forced to have a mime skin wherever I go because it says it in the name :/
