... but it sounds like this hasn't worked for Angilis, so I don't think it would for me either.
You know what they say about "assume" right? I know from his previous posts that Angilis has had a real tough time playing MC so I can also assume that he's giddy as a little girl and is playing like there's no tomorrow. I could also assume that he's in a different timezone and he's working and can't reply...
His absence of answer only says that. He didn't answer. :smile.gif:

Good call. You should do that since your problem, even though is seems the same, could be resolved by uninstalling and reinstalling java. Who knows! There's only one way to find out. :wink.gif:
Alternatively if you have a USB key, you can download the offline file and test it out.

Actually I've been super busy with school =p I'm sorry for my slow responses. I downloaded from your link and it didn't seem to fix the problem. The only way I can still play Minecraft is through changing the render distance to anything less than Far.
I assure you if any of the suggestions posted did work, I'd be telling you guys about it. Sorry I didn't get back to this thread sooner.
I'm having the same problem. I haven't tried to re-install Java yet, but it sounds like this hasn't worked for Angilis, so I don't think it would for me either. I don't have internet access for my PC at the moment, or I would try that too.
Dropping the view distance from FAR to NORMAL has prevented the crash from happening - except in the rare instance where I toggle between them to search for a faraway object, then sometimes it crashes when or after I do that. My computer can run the game fine otherwise - I suspect it is something in the code that isn't playing well with the way something is set on my machine. First chance I get, if no one has resolved this, I'll try the Java reinstall.
The exact same happens to me. It only takes half a minute or so after toggling the setting back to Far for the game to crash. I'm glad this isn't just my problem =p
MadJack, thanks for the help. I'll try and download the Java links you provided, but it may be a few months as my work computer has an internet connection much worse than dial-up, and I won't be able to get my laptop on the net for a while.
I just really have a hard time believing it's a Java install problem when this typically only happens with the view distance set to FAR. And it doesn't matter if I'm way down inside of a cave - if it's on far, a crash is inevitable. However, like any good computer tech, I know we should rule out all possibilities, so I'm with you on that, and I'll try just about anything I can, because I would really like to play it as it was meant to be.
Angilis, I'm sure we're not alone. I've been searching the forums since I picked up the game and hadn't seen anything, and I thought it might help to speak up rather thank lurk about the issue. If it doesn't get fixed in a patch, I plan on looking through just about everything to find out why it works fine on my friends computer, but not mine (or yours).
@SmugFrog
As you know it's a process of elimination. You go from the most likely culprits then dig deeper.
@Angilis
Sorry to see there's no improvement. But just to make sure, did you check with the Java installation link? Did the java page said it was installed correctly? I guess you did, but a confirmation would help.
---
I don't remember if you guys posted your specs, but could you do this? I'm starting to suspect your video card might have a problem with far-seeing. Limited memory? Old hardware? That would help.

Did some googling and several issues where it seems the video drivers were the problems. So let's check that.
Right-click somewhere empty on your desktop and in the popup window click on NVIDIA Control Panel. In the nVidia Control Panel, click on "System Information" on the lower left corner. Another window will open. On the right panel (Details) there's a list of files and their version numbers. What does "Driver version:" line says? If you have the latest drivers made by nVidia, it should read 258.96.
Now, I think that's a dead-end. For some reason, if that's still the case, you can play in the browser, but not with the stand-alone client. This means something weird is going on with your downloaded .exe file.
Let's see the drivers version then we'll check something else.

It seems I did have that old of a version =p Now the Driver version appears just fine. It's strange, I've always tried updating it through the control panel, but it told me that the software was updated. That's what I get for trusting my computer =p
I'll let you know in a bit if Minecraft still hiccups.
So far, no crashes! I'll test it for a longer period when I have more time to do so, but so far there's no issues! (Normally it would have crashed by now).
I'm marrying you, Madjack, just so you can save me from my stupidity =p Thank you so much for peeking into this thread.
If other people find that updating their video cards is working, please post here, and I'll officially add SOLVED to the title of the forum.
I would appreciate feedback and advice on the problems brought up in the topic, not discouragement for seeking help. If you don't want to contribute then kindly complain about the community elsewhere.
You think I haven't been trying to fix this? ever since I bought the game I've been trying to fix this EXE problem downloading java things,re-installing,using task manager to set java to use only certain CPU's. and anytime I've made or topic or someone else like you does no one helps gets VERY discouraging after a while and I'm sure someones gonna complain soon enough and a mod is gonna lock this.
There. It seems the problem has been fixed.
Maybe if you'd try to be constructive as Angilis, people would help you more. *shrug*
@Angilis
I'm glad the problem is fixed (even if it's not official yet, I'm confident it will be *crosses fingers*). On the subject of video drivers, NEVER trust Windows Update on that matter! ALWAYS visit nVidia, or your manufacturer's support section, for new and updated drivers.
*warm and fuzzy feeling* :wink.gif:
PS: Oh and on the subject of marrying me, *cough* huh, sure. I'm single! :wink.gif: lol

Well, I have just successfully played for at least an hour with no crashes to report! I'm happy to say that my particular issue has been solved, and I can only hope that the solution to my problem (Posted by MadJack) will apply to everyone else.
Thank you MadJack! You've saved the game for me! I will now change the topic header to announce that the issue is resolved. If anyone else is still having this problem, please continue to post in this forum and use it to help provide attention to others that may assist you. I of course will still monitor the thread myself until it is gone.
I have not yet resolved my issue, but I will try this as soon as I can. The problem with laptops is they want you to go to the website of the computer company to get updated drivers - and laptop drivers don't seem to get updated as much as regular video card drivers.
I thought perhaps my video drivers were out of date, so I did a check while we were inport Singapore for a few days (I'm in the Navy), but no updates. That didn't surprise me - but I've had a lot of video card issues in the past with various games when others don't have them, and I have to wait for a game to be patched before it works well with my card.
I'm hoping I can download the nvidia control panel separately then, I'm running a search right now. If I can get it to download on this painfully slow connection, perhaps I can transfer it over to my laptop.
I found another "issue" in the last few days that points to it being related to the video card/drivers. Some friends of mine are running Minecraft with no problems. My comptuer is a Dell XPS, and it's a gaming laptop, a lot more powerful than theirs. One of my friends is getting 100+ FPS in caves, the other 60+. Mine sits around 30 or so, and the same outside, even with the settings rolled in to the lowest. Very odd, isn't it?
It's funny about Angilis' avatar - that's exactly how I was feeling playing Minecraft before I found out to set the view distance to Normal - I kept losing items when it would crash! Perhaps he will change his to a happier version once you stop being so Mad. :tongue.gif:
I'll come back and report what I get. Keep your fingers crossed guys!

You can't download nVidia's Control Panel separately. It comes with the drivers. Head over there and download the latest drivers for your card. If you have a slow connection, start the download before going to bed if it's possible.

No, it's no odd. If your drivers are outdated it is the most likely culprit for low FPS. A gaming PC/Laptop is as good as its parts. Even if their general PC parts are average, if their video card is superior they will gain a potentially serious advantage. Optimization of the computer as a whole is also an issue to keep an eye on. The more clutter you have, the less performance you will have. Memory, hard drive spin, files fragmentation are all parts in the puzzle too. I personally have 300+ FPS on FAR and FANCY, but at certain area in my single alpha map I get to high teens. The game can run darn fast on certain maps while bogs down on others. S/MP is also known to have fewer FPS issues than Single Player Alpha.

Well, the latest video drivers on Dell's website are from 2008, which is what I have installed. :sad.gif: No luck there.
Once, when I was having trouble with another game I tried an NVIDIA driver from laptopvideo2go.com, and it worked better - but had some other graphical quirks. I downloaded one of those last night, and I'll make a system restore point and see if that driver makes a difference.
That's too bad about being able to get the control center as a stand alone... I hate how laptop companies support their video cards. I had the same issue years ago with a Sony Vaio - I was playing Battlefield Vietnam, and couldn't see any character models, just floating weapons. 3 weeks later, Sony released a driver update that fixed the problem, but it was a pain to wait for it. I feel like Dell just doesn't care. :sad.gif:
I'm burning the flies files off to a CD right now (both the video and java latest install), so we'll see how that goes.
EDIT - No luck with the java reinstall - still the same issue. The video drivers didn't finish downloading. Sometimes, if I leave something on, it just cuts off in the middle but looks like it is complete (22 Megs when the file is supposed to be 44). I'm re-downloading now. 44 minutes. I've found with Firefox, if I pause when it looks like it stops, then resume, it will finish without cutting off - but I don't know how long I can sit here and do that before I have to go. :sad.gif:
Not to be a complete boner and derail, but I feel I should mention that I was having the same exact problem as the OP, and figured "Well I went to Dell and updated all my drivers, so that can't be the problem!". Then I followed the advice here and got the drivers direct from nVidia.
Don't ****ing trust dell.com
They were about 3 years behind the actual current driver for my nVidia card, and now Minecraft (and all my other games that were running like ****) are playing great. Madjack, you rule, even though you didn't directly work with me, you're extremely helpful and probably have solved a lot of other lurkers' problems as well!
As I usually point out, use the MANUFACTURER'S website to update drivers.
Although I have to say that some drivers can only be updated from the laptop/computer manufacturer, not the video card manufacturer... That's because those bastards most likely use proprietary code and/or have heavily tweaked the hardware and can only function properly with their own drivers.
Anyway. Long post for nothing.
I appreciate the kudos. :smile.gif: Thanks.
